Got the same email. I am SO annoyed. It's only my insurance too but i'm not sure on getting the grades for my firm. I can't imagine sharing a room, what a nightmare and the prices are stupid considering you have to share :frown: .

It's very very frustrating. However, I've been looking at private accomm around Edinburgh and it's really not that bad for price, especially with sharing. I'd rather share a flat with strangers than share a room with one!!! I think I'll definitely turn this accommodation offer down, once results have come in start thinking about sorting out a flat in Edinburgh if needs be - if worst comes to the worst I can always stay in a hostel for the first few weeks whilst I find a place to live! (The High Street Hostel is IMMENSE  ).

Ah... all will be well! I hope! :s-smilie:

New Arthur Place, 4 room flat, flat 3, room 1! First choice... except it's a large room instead of small. I was a bit sad about that extra 600 pounds, but now I'm just glad I didn't get this twinned catered stuff that's going around! I'm actually getting really excited now

Wow... okay, I never saw this coming!
I've never heard of anyone being placed in Pollock Halls having opted for s/c, the usual way is if you apply for s/c you get that and then if you apply for Pollock there is a chance that you'll be given s/c as Pollock is generally over subscribed. So unless it has changed to the other way around this year I'm not sure what is going on.

If it is a financial issue, I would genuinely consider pressing them to allocate you a different accommodation. I really don't find it fair if people have opted for the cheapest ones and are then put somewhere more expensive, which seems to be happening here.

Also, remember that you do also have the option to reject the accommodation offer. This will potentially leave you with more work as you need to find a flat but it's not impossible, but there are more first year students than you think in private housing in Edinburgh. Finding a flat isn't too complicated particularly if you are willing to come up here for a week and look for one in the city - some of you could group together. Most flats in Edinburgh are 3 or 4 person meaning you don't need an awful lot of you and you could always advertise the spare room to someone else in your position. Yeah, it's not ideal and I'd be pretty mad too but there are alternatives - you do not have to live with the uni accom you've been given, and you would still have a great 1st year so there is nothing to worry about there.

If anyone is wondering - rental prices for flats generally start around £300 per person per month, excluding bills, working up to in excess of £400 for people who have more money than sense. You can find something decent for less than £320, that's for sure, and then bills will be around £20 a month from my own experience meaning it IS cheaper than the university owned housing. The typical student areas are known as Marchmont, Newington, Bruntsfield, New Town, Toll Cross and Old Town, if you're looking online for places. These are all within a 15-20 minute walk of George Square but often closer than that. If anyone needs to know anything in particular, message me and I'll try and help you out... I'm going into my 4th year now so have rented for the last few years.

I've got to go out now but I'll come back later
I'd seriously hate to be in this position... I was stressing about having to find a flat for next year whilst I was on a year abroad, and I couldn't imagine having tried to do that without even knowing the city or anyone in it!
Really weird that they're putting people who chose self catering into Pollock considering demand for catered well exceeds supply :s-smilie:

I want to know where they're putting me, stupid suspence :woo:
Hey guys
I pretty sure im goin to edinburgh next year(09/10) after missing my 4A offer from Imperial.
I got this letter yesterday from the edinburgh accommodation office. It basically says that the only accommodation they can offer me is a catered bunk-bedded room at pollock halls:frown: I need some info about the rooms. All i can imagine is a first year full of awkward moments. Please take a look and give some advice.
Accommodation_Letter.docx

I could really do with some advice on finding private accommodation as i have no clue about the area or costs ect.
We were advised at the open days that historically Catered is over subscribed but they predicted it would be different this year with more people choosing self catered so it looks like they were right.

What do you need us to tell you? There saying if you want accomodation from then you are only getting a bunk bed in Pollock Halls.

As a result, and with some regret, we have to advise you that, if you are successful in obtaining a place at the University of Edinburgh for September 2009 which you then accept and if you have already applied for University accommodation or intend to do so before the deadline of 16 August 2009, then you will ONLY BE MADE AN OFFER OF BUNK BEDDED CATERED ACCOMMODATION AT POLLOCK HALLS.

p.s That letter has your full name in it, just in case you didn't realise.

Hey, I got the same email as a lot of you guys about pollock catered bunk beds, it's only my insurance but now i'm extra stressed worrying if i've met my offer for my firm. The whole thing is very annoying, does anyone know how big pollock hall rooms are? I've just got this awful image of spending the year in a tiny room with someone I don't get along with :frown: . I'm thinking about private accomadation now which is concerning me, I didn't think i'd have to worry about that until next year at least.

Ive got the same email...I wonder how many applicants it was sent to?
I didn't think there were that many bunk beds at Edinburgh.

Oh no, I'm really worried about where I'm going to be put. Is it people who had edinburgh as their insurance that are getting this bunk bed rubbish?
It seems to be just those who have it as insurance, yeah.

Anyone who had it as their firm got the bunk bed email?
Yeh it does seem like those on insurance only for some reason.

Ok, also I was just looking at the website. They say that is your offer in unconditional firm before 25th July you should receive an accommodation offer by the 31st July!

Just to say that I've added some information onto the first post of this thread about renting property in Edinburgh, from how to find a flat, to prices and what you need to be looking out for from landlords etc. As I said, I'm now a 4th year (and feeling it) so I've been here for the last few years, renting privately since 2nd year.

Brilliant, some great advice there.
I got the same email about the bunk-bedded rooms. Edinburgh is my insurance and obviously I can't be 100% sure about getting my firm offer's grades, so this is very worrying. I sent a rather angry email in response, basically telling them that it wasn't acceptable. Worst of all was the line, "We understand that this might influence any decision you make in respect of Edinburgh and so felt you would appreciate early notice of this inevitable situation."
Two things there: firstly, if it were inevitable, they would have seen it coming and warned us before now. Secondly, "early notice"? Seriously? You've only got a week to respond to the email and, weirdly enough, some people have the crazy notion of going on holiday over the summer and can't check their emails regularly. And "It is of course very possible that the decision required above may impact upon your decision to come to the University of Edinburgh this year". Well it's too late now! Don't they understand that the decision has been made? Not amused at all by this.
