I have the same email about the whole bunk bedded catered, it's an absolute joke it's my worst nightmare, i wanted single self-catered it makes so much more sense i don't know why all student accommodation isn't like this it would save all of this extra worry on top of results. Edinburgh is my insurance, but i'm pretty sure i havn't getting in my first choice Imperial AAA (all As in maths modules so that means 12 maths modules for me) Are people accepting the accommodation offer and putting up with it for a couple of weeks becasue is there any chance of being able to move once people start to drop out and stuff. Or are people looking for private accommodation i would rather share a house with people i didn't know than a room. The only thing is in this situation if you organise a house with people and some of them get their firm what happens to the extra rooms, would you have to pay more.

So confusing i was hoping not to have to do this until 2nd year when you have friends to do it with.

Does anyone have a copy of the email they sent to people holding insurance offers as I stupidly managed to delete mine?

They were really right about it affecting people's decision to study at Edinburgh. I'd rather take a gap year and reapply, not to Edinburgh, than live somewhere catered, shared and too expensive for me. I chose the cheapest accomodation I could because of money, and now they hit me with this. So not going to happen.

Instead of re-applying next year you could consider private accommodation. As oxymoronic so kindly and thoroughly explained it's not as hard as it seems. Check the first post for more information about that.

Since there seems to be several of you in the same position it seems to be the perfect opportunity to get together and get a flat of your own.

I will, without doubt, go for private accommodation if I end up in twin-bunk or catered.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH - ACTION REQUIRED

Dear Applicant

You are currently holding a Conditional Insurance offer for study at the University of Edinburgh commencing September 2009 and you will know in due course whether you have met the criteria for that place.

Once again this year, the University of Edinburgh has been very successful in attracting new students and, whilst this is very positive indeed, it does place some strain on the accommodation we have available for first year undergraduates.

The University provides a guarantee of accommodation to all first year students normally resident outside the City of Edinburgh boundary. This year we have no choice other than to allocate a larger number of students to shared accommodation - a mixture of twin bedded and, mostly, bunk bedded rooms.

As a result, and with some regret, we have to advise you that, if you are successful in obtaining a place at the University of Edinburgh for September 2009 which you then accept and if you have already applied for University accommodation or intend to do so before the deadline of 16 August 2009, then you will ONLY BE MADE AN OFFER OF BUNK BEDDED CATERED ACCOMMODATION AT POLLOCK HALLS.

We understand that this might influence any decision you make in respect of Edinburgh and so felt you would appreciate early notice of this inevitable situation.

Please consider this information very carefully, as we need you to take the following action before Friday 24 July 2009:

A: If you have already applied for accommodation, or intend to do so before 16 August 2009, and the allocation of bunk bedded accommodation as outlined above would be acceptable, then please reply to this email by either (a) clicking here and sending or (b) reply to this email by typing 'ACCEPT' and your full name in the subject line.

B: If you have applied for University accommodation but do NOT wish to accept this type of bunk bedded accommodation, please reply to this email by either (a) clicking here and sending or (b) reply to this email by typing 'DECLINE' and your full name in the subject line. We will then assume that, in doing so, you have withdrawn your accommodation application. This will NOT affect your application to study at the University of Edinburgh.

If, for whatever reason, you do not respond to this email by 24 July 2009, we shall assume you understand that any application you have already made for University accommodation, or may make in due course, will only result in an offer for bunk bedded catered accommodation.

It is of course very possible that the decision required above may impact upon your decision to come to the University of Edinburgh this year. You are strongly recommended to discuss any such non-accommodation concerns as soon as possible with the appropriate College admissions office.

Thank you

apparently 2700 emails have been sent to insurance choice people!! the accommodation office said only about 70 insurance people take up places at edinburgh(based on last year figures) this does not make sense surely!
why did they not send this email with the offers so peopl could make an informed decision and thereby choose a different insurance choice.they have done this so they can be sure of filling all places and more and if u r an insurance choice you are clearly less desirable than a firm choice! bunk beds at the age of 18 its pathetic.
I am considering contacting the principle because of the wording/timing/pointlessness of chooosing accommodation before deadline/lack of information re pricing and size etc.

I would certainly not have chosen edinburgh as my insurance had I known this information and I was going to be treated less favourably than first choice people!! I actually chose self catered accomm as well cos pollock hall was way overpriced london is cheaper!!!

Yeah, private accomodation would be my best option, but to be honest I was already a bit iffy about going to Edinburgh, so this was sort of the final nail in the coffin for me.

On a different note, could some one give me a the email address to reply too? If only I pressed the right button, and didnt delete the original email. Grrrrr. XD

OH ****!!
I just checked my accommodation application confirmation e-mail since I filled it in months ago and realised all 3 of my preferences (which are self-catered) also have 'shared' written beside them! But i DO NOT want to share. I really can't remember there being a box on the form and I definitely would've choen single. But also , is it not impossible to share in the self-catered accom. anyway??They are all single bedroom flats...i'm so scared and confused.

also, were we meant to send away certificates of GCSE's/AS levels? cos I don't think I have. I'm so failing life right now, just so scared about these stories of ppl applying for s/c and getting offered pollock. Although it seems to only be happening to those who have edinburgh as their insurance, it's my firm.

I've heard nothing back on accommodation yet and don't know what to do about this whole 'shared' thing. Have most ppl heard back by now? I have a conditional offer so maybe it'll take a bit longer! Do they send you an e-mail or so you have to keep checking the EULICD/myEd thing?

Advise please!!

As the Hitchiker's Guide would say, DO NOT PANIC. The "shared" in this context refers to the bathroom situation, NOT the bedrooms. Then again, I selected all self-catered, shared bathrooms but single rooms, and ended up with bunked for my accomm offer. But fingers crossed for you.

I assume 'shared' just means you'd be sharing the flat with other people, not necessarily sharing a room. It says the same thing on my application so I wouldn't worry.

I also don't think you'll hear about your accommodation until you've got your results. That's the impression I was under, anyway.

I got the same email about the bunk-bedded rooms. Edinburgh is my insurance and obviously I can't be 100% sure about getting my firm offer's grades, so this is very worrying. I sent a rather angry email in response, basically telling them that it wasn't acceptable. Worst of all was the line, "We understand that this might influence any decision you make in respect of Edinburgh and so felt you would appreciate early notice of this inevitable situation."
Two things there: firstly, if it were inevitable, they would have seen it coming and warned us before now. Secondly, "early notice"? Seriously? You've only got a week to respond to the email and, weirdly enough, some people have the crazy notion of going on holiday over the summer and can't check their emails regularly. And "It is of course very possible that the decision required above may impact upon your decision to come to the University of Edinburgh this year". Well it's too late now! Don't they understand that the decision has been made? Not amused at all by this.

I have a feeling that Edinburgh have managed to piss off each and every one of their insurance offer students... so well done them.

Oh well. If needs be, getting a flat should be rather exciting.

What seems a bit unfair to me is the way in which people with insurance offers are being singled out. I thought the whole point in not allocating rooms until people have met their offers was to make it fair to everyone, so that everyone had the same chance of getting what they wanted?

I don't know if that makes any sense.

Hmhm! It just seems a very silly way of doing it, too, as they don't know the exact figures yet - if all of those holding insurance offers to Edinburgh miss their firm offers (heaven forbid) then they probably won't have enough damn bunk rooms! Gah.

I should really stop reading this thread, it's making me angry. I'm really regretting putting Edinburgh as my insurance - I don't mind living out, but it's the way they've handled this matter that I find off-putting. :frown:

Thanks very much for the information guys! It is really ****** and offputting the way the uni are treating the insurance people!

I'm really excited, I can't wait to leave and immerse myself in a land of scottish accents! Although I've recently started freaking out about the uselessnesss of my course - English Lit./History.

I panic too much...

Useless courses? Pish tosh. :p: Four years of doing what you love can never be useless. I refuse to think practically until at least the end of 2nd year with regards to "what I want to do with History" (I hate the dreaded question: "so, what are your plans after university..?"!!).

All in all, if you were a university, who would you give preference to? The people who REALLY wanted to go there, or those that kinda wanted to?
Reply 559
The 'kinda' comment is not really the point. the fact is Edinburgh have not placed all potential applicants on the same footing as regards accommodation, it is clear thereis a two tier system. They have also stopped applicants making a fully informed choice re choosing insurance choice uni as am sure many people would not have chosen edinburgh as insurance choice if they knew they were going to get the dregs of accommodation!!
