The 'kinda' comment is not really the point. the fact is Edinburgh have not placed all potential applicants on the same footing as regards accommodation, it is clear thereis a two tier system. They have also stopped applicants making a fully informed choice re choosing insurance choice uni as am sure many people would not have chosen edinburgh as insurance choice if they knew they were going to get the dregs of accommodation!!

spot on, i wouldn't have applied to edin full stop if i'd of known i wouldn't get self-catered accom in a room of my own. surely it's not that much to ask! it doesn't exactly scream indepedance does it, having a bunk bed and being cooked for :/ i'm going to ring edin up on monday and if they can't do anything i'm going to see if i can change my insurance or see if my firm will offer me some sort of alternative degree if i miss my offer .. i can hope :|

They need to allocate those rooms to some people, why not those who are less likely to be there next year?

Anyway, chances are if you only make your insurance offer you could probably switch for something better come results day.
So I happened to be on myed thingy (because I got an unrelated email about a message I'd received) and saw I'd been made an offer of accommodation.

Now, for a start, I haven't received ANYthing to advise me of this, so I could have easily missed that. Secondly, I went through the whole contract thing, paid my deposit etc etc...and as far as I'm aware, it's still showing as my acceptance of the accommodation is pending.

So I'm freaking out that I've given the accom services all my bank details and stuff, and some technical glitch has meant that the whole thing hasn't updated and I'm going to lose my accom and the deposit will disappear into the void of the internet and *hyperventilates*

Also, I received a confirmation letter regarding my direct debit account for them, and it was like 'please refer to the PDF attached' and there was no PDF attached... I sent an email back, but haven't received anything in return...

I think it's the timing of their sending out this information that irks. Had we been informed before selecting Edinburgh as our insurance that we might get the worst (let's face it!!) accommodation available then, all well and good, this might have affected our decisions. Had they waited until after Results Day then it would be fairer, as then they would know exactly who is coming. At the moment it's an incredibly difficult situation as we have to respond to the accommodation offer before the end of July - and most of us would rather not take the risk of ending up in aforementioned bunked accommodation on the off-chance that we might be switched at a later date!!!

Also... there's gonna be a weird atmosphere in that section of halls, if all of the bunked rooms are together - they're gonna be full of people who, lovely as Edinburgh is, would rather be somewhere else. :frown:

it's just clearly a bad situation to be involved in, i've been looking at UNITE it's expensive though :/ i've found some amazing flats privately, you need flatmates though :|
So I happened to be on myed thingy (because I got an unrelated email about a message I'd received) and saw I'd been made an offer of accommodation - Kincaid's Court  Second choice, but a lot better than this malarky going on with bunk bedded accom :s-smilie:

BUT, for a start, I haven't received ANYthing to advise me of this, so I could have easily missed the offer through Myed portal. Anyone have any ideas?

I got an email sent my ed.ac.uk email address advising me of an accomodation offer. I have tried to check my accommodation status now but it says

Welcome to the myAccommodation Channel
Important changes to University systems are taking place this weekend, 18/19 July 2009.
This means the service by which you can see your offer of accommodation and process the on-line contract will NOT be available until Monday 20 July after 09:00hrs. We apologise for any inconvenience.

So this might have something to do with why yours is pending. I also got the same email to my uni account with no pdf attached but it was sent to my non uni email account.

I haven;t received any pre-acceptance email at all - like I said, I got an unrelated email into myed regarding my joining pack, and just happened to notice I'd had an offer made. So I have no idea how long it had been sitting there at all... Which makes me wonder if this is why nothing updated when I accepted.

I will be so very pissed off if that's why and they try to put me in Pollock in a bloody bunk bed room because of their system error.

Yeah, mine also says that now, which is irritating...

The email without the PDF was sent to my non-uni hotmail account, too - I emailed back immediately pointing out the lack of PDF, but have had sod all response ¬_¬

Can anyone be very nice and give me the email address to reply to so I can deny the bunk bed accomodation offer?
Thanks.

I have applied this year, and I have just passed my last conditional requirement (the TOEFL test) which means that when my TOEFL results will arrive at the university I will be on unconditional! Such a wonderful thing!

Now I post here the first time because I would like your opinion about which S/C would be the best for a first year BSc Computer Science and Mathematics student. My first obvious question is that where will all my classes be? In the new Informatics Forum? It was so good to watch the DVD about the new building, I hope I will have most of my classes there!

My most important factor would be to have a flat in a quiet and green area. I will bring my bicycle so distance is not a big problem for me, noise and lack of trees would be much more of an issue!

If I will be near George Square, I have collected my best ideas here:
- Warrender Park Crescent, small room
- Warrender Park Road, small room
- New Arthur Place, small room

What do you think about them? And I have just one more question:

- If I apply now (I just wanted to wait till I get unconditional), will I have any problems getting a place I choose? I have just read some posts saying that the S/C accomodation are full and now there is no chance getting into any one of them. Is it an issue for everybody or only for somebody on insurance choice?

Howdy neighbour! Flat 3 for me. I have no idea what the layout of the place is like, I'm assuming we'll be on the ground floor?

Cool, you're going almost the same road as me . I'm doing Computer Science too (Artificial Intelligence) and applied for almost the same houses for the same reason. Instead of New Arthur Place I choce Hermit's Croft since it's a bit further away of the main street than NAP. So all in all I think you've made great choices.

First year (and I think second year too) of Informatics (CS) will be as I understand it almost exclusively in Appleton Tower, which is a pretty ugly concrete building just next to the Informatics Forum. Actually the Informatics Forum I think is mostly for Post-graduate and research.

You won't need your bike to get to Appleton Tower though, it's really close from both Warrender Park and NAP, tops 10 minute walk. However, it may come in handy in later years when some modules (I think mostly some advanced Math modules) are done in King's Building which are a bit further south of the city centre.

Regarding applying now shouldn't be a problem, in fact everyone who put Edinburgh as Firm and apply before the deadline in August should have the same chance of getting what they want. However, the Accommodation Services have been acting a bit... unexpected, lately so no one can be really sure where they will end up. Either way you should feel safe about applying now as you'll be in the same boat as everyone else.

Cheers classmate .
Am I the only person who specifically applied for a shared room? It's just not a big deal to me. I've shared rooms plenty of times before. Plus, the difference in price is more than worth it for first year.

I can understand if you specifically wanted a single room and weren't able to get it, but why is it such a nightmarish thought to have to share a room? In the US, it's expected that Undergraduate university students do.

People want their privacy, and you're not going to get it in a shared room. On top of that the prospect of being allocated a room with a complete stranger doesn't appeal to most. There's a chance you won't get on with the person at all, which then makes the whole year a living hell to some. Most see university a place to grow up and mature in, you won't feel like an adult sharing a room. Etc. etc. I'm sure you know the downsides of it, and I think there's more of them than upsides.

I can see why it's not such a big deal in the US where people have grown up to the thought. But here people grow up thinking that once they move away from home they'll have their privacy, their own room etc. I wouldn't even have considered sharing a room.

the whole problem with the bunk bed problem is the duplicity of edinburgh university they have basically ommitted to inform potential students who were making decisions for insurance choice that they would not receive the same standard of accommodation as firm. Many people would not have put it as their insurance. therefore reducing potential students for edinburgh, I think greed is the word that needs applyong to edinburgh.

Also i think all applicants for 2010/11 need to be informed of this practise!!
Okay, I haven't heard ANYTHING from accomodation services. Applied two months ago and got the conformation letter and everything. Just checked my email, and MyEd- nothing. Should I be worried..?
(Edinburgh is Conditional, Firm for me).

Edit: Just noticed the accomodation channel. But it's down?! hoping I haven't missed an offer... :|

I don't think that's all that unusual - I applied in very early April at the latest and have only just noticed my offer... And I'm an unconditional firm, too, and have been since I applied for accommodation.

It seems like a lot of insurance people seem to be getting their offers to tell them about the situation with the bunk bed thing. When I went to UCL last year, I didn't receive my accom offer until after I became unconditional (got my results), and consequently only knew about 3 weeks before I was due to move to London.

Don't know how Edinburgh works for these things, but I wouldn't worry yourself just yet.
