So, I think this should be my last question, heh. :p:

But, do any current students know if international students can move in before fresher's week? I know some unis have international students come about a week earlier. I know it's kind of early, but my mother is wanting to plan ahead....

I don't think so, no.
Your accommodation will be available from the first day of freshers week, which is Saturday 12th September this year. They rent rooms out to tourists over the summer so you can't really arrive earlier and move into your room because there could be someone else living in it. Nothing in the university starts until 12th September, all of the information and events (even for international students) will occur during this week so there is no need for you to arrive earlier.

There are plenty of hotels in the city to stay in if you need to come earlier due to cheap flights etc. Look at travellodge, they offer good quality rooms for very cheap prices especially if you book far in advance.

Yeah, I reckoned we'd have to stay in a hotel or hostel or something. I just wanted to make sure about these things, because my mother wants us to book flights soon.

Thanks for the help!
hey! i was wandering was the general opinion was on warrender park road/crescent? is it okay location for kings building?
My flatmates moved in our flat a couple of days before the move-in weekend. But they were exchange students from the States and a part of this exchange programme (can't remember the name at the moment) that a lot of Americans take part in so maybe it was different for them.

(I've not had an offer yet, I probably won't get one but nothing wrong with thinking ahead a bit! :p:) I'm looking for self-catered accommodation, en-suite would be nice but I'm not that bothered if it's not, central location and in a single room which ISN'T in a flat. I've looked on the website - is this Blackfriars one my only option?

Why don't you want to be in a flat?

I just don't, it doesn't appeal for now. I'd rather be in halls.

Then you've got a choice of Pollock, which is catered. Or Blackfriars Street which must be new as they never used to have en suites/non flats as self catered. I guess you could go for Kincades as there is a chance you'd end up in a 12 person flat which would be more like halls, but other than that it is live in a flat or live in Pollock.

There are some residences which are more like halls and are catered but they are reserved for post graduate students.

Yeah they'll be fine - all of the accommodation in the central area is fine for KB. You're better of living in the centre than at KB, even if it means you have to travel further to get to lectures. In first year a lot of the classes are in George Square anyway as far as I know. You can get the Lothian bus from Marchmont to KB, or you can walk down Melville Drive and meet the free university bus at Summer Hall. A lot of people walk or cycle down Minto Street. I've never actually been to KB so I don't know how long it takes, but from what my flatmates have said I don't think its longer than 25-30 minutes walking.
Does anyone know why the University keeps pushing back the application date for housing?

Because they're not ready yet. Given it's the middle of February, it doesn't make a huge difference when you apply in the grand scheme of things.
I was just curious

I've changed my mind! () I got the wrong idea of student flats, I imagined being in a flat as sort of being in a single flat abandoned from everyone but your flatmates, don't know why, but I was put right last night when talking to my friends, lol. Now I've had a change of heart can someone advise me on the best ones?

Around half of the first year students live in university owned flats. This is over 2000 people. You'll certainly not be abandoned from everyone! Most buildings have 20 or more flats of 5 or 6 people, meaning there will be around 120+ people in your building. Basically the same as one of the Houses in Pollock. It will probably end up that you'll never speak to the vast majority of the people who live around you anyway regardless of whether you live on a corridor in Pollock or in a flat with neighbours.

With regards to best ones, look at the first post on this thread as there are loads of links to threads where people have asked the same question, as well as others.

Because both buildings are owned by Unite rather than the university and were only available this year because university accommodation ran out. Given the going rate for a room with Unite is about twice what the University charge people, the loss they are making must be substantial. Most years there is more than enough accommodation to go round.

You're very fussy about your accommodation needs :p:

How competitive is Blackfriars Street?

Blackfriars, despite what it says on the accommodation website, is primarily for returning students. Places will, therefore, only be offered to first years if it's not filled and accommodation services is overwhelmed (as they were last summer).
