Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone had any useful information about accomodation for undergraduate freshers? I'm thinking I'd prefer self-catering Uni accomodation but any tips/things to avoid welcome!!

Thanks!

Oh ok! Thanks
Hello.

I'm applying for freshers accomodation. I have narrowed down my options mainly by what I have picked up on this thread! My priorities are- not being miles from George Square and not being massively disturbed by loud music (like on Cowgate, apparently!).

These are what I am considering:
College Wynd
Darroch Court
East Newington Place
Hermit's Croft
New Arthur Place
5 Nicolson Street & 5 South College Street
Sciennes 2
South Clerk Street
Warrender Park Road
Warrender Park Crescent

I was wondering if anyone had any tips/opinions about these places? Good ones? Not so good ones?? Any help welcome!!

Thanks,

Okay, TOTAL change of plan!I've done some more readin and realised that i definitely want self-catered now!I've always wanted to live self-catered cos im from n.ireland where EVERYONE [literally 98% of every year in my school] goes to queen's belfast and cos they know everyone and the place the majority live out from first year in private accom. I just thought it was normal in most unis to live in halls.

but yet, enough digression, im set on self-catered. a bit wary of getting stuck with ppl i mite not like tho,but hey!

the few plces ive narrowed it down to are:
darroch
robertson's close
warrender park cresent
5 nicholson street
new arthur place

was considering sciennes and hermit's but heard they were a bit far out.

basically i know very little about all of these and would very much appreciate it if anyone who knows could gimme the 411:biggrin:

thanks

Sciennes and Hermit's Croft are both considerably closer to George Square than Warrender Pk Rd and Warrender Pk Crescent. New Arthur's Place is pretty much in the same place as Hermit's Croft. And if you're considering them then Pollock Halls is round the corner. I suggest before going any further in your decisions that you look at a map so that you understand where these places are located rather than going on hearsay.

That place is near the clubbing area i was told and i heard about a nasty story that a poor girl had to use earplugs to sleep for the whole year! :s-smilie:

Inside they are all very similar (as in every self-catered flat is kitted out in a standard way, so there is no nicest, etc.) other than Darroch which allegedly has more of a community feel because of its lay out (not that I've heard anyone saying this after freshers' week, so I'm not sure how true it is) and have washing machines in the flats.

Pick based on location - it's the real big difference between everything.

cool, thanks.
Just made my choices:
1. Darroch [not that i'll get in]
2. Robertson's Close
3. New Arthur Place

What ho, old egg. Glad to hear that you're coming to Edinburgh

Topping, isn't it? Here's to 4 years of polimen's-helmet-pinching and indoor cricket (even if it isn't Oxford and I have no idea how to play cricket) :woo:

I still need to pass IELTS with 6.5, which shouldn't be that much of a problem, I hope.

It definitely shall not.

I must learn cricket as well, though I'm disappointed that I cannot find Wodehouse-like wool cricket trousers anywhere these days. They're all modern sportswear :frown:

But here's to the UoE Wodehouse Society

i know this isnt strictly related to accomodation, but all the other threads seem to be a little dead...

What all do you actually need to bring to uni??as regards stuff for your room/studies/general things u wouldnt think of?

and should you bring ALL your clothes...or be economical with the proposed space?

Hey, i was wondering if the non en-suite rooms in pollock halls have washbasins? Can't seem to find out on the edinburgh website..
Hi.
I'm heading to Edinburgh Sep 2009 (AHHHHHH!!!!) for International Relations.
I'd like to eb in self catered accomodation - not all that bothered about where, although would rather not be on Cowgate, eprsonally - was wondering if anyone knew which self catered ones ahve basins in teh rooms, if any?
Also - everyone keeps talkign about how you rpobably won't get any of the places you ask for, but was wondering, does that mean if I put self catered I'm, jsut as likely to get catered or what? Help?

Self-catered flats don't have basins in the rooms, that's a feature of halls-style accommodation. Your self-catered flat is literally a flat.

Catered accommodation is heavily oversubscribed in general, meaning that if you apply for only catered there is a chance that you will be unlucky and end up in self-catered but if you apply for only self-catered you will end up in self-catered because the catered accommodation is filled and beyond already. Unless this year everyone decides that they are not interested in catered accommodation, but that is an unprecedented idea, highly unlikely and not something that you can prepare yourself for.
Right, I think I have an original question.

I've already apploed and I was wondering at what point in the year would the accomodation service contact people with any queries and how are they most likrly to do so?

I am mostly interested as I did mention my disability on the relavant part of the form (I'm partially sighted) and O presumed I should tell them, even though I don't need any special arrangements. I would be interested to hear of anyone's experiences on this side of applying for accomodation.
