Hello,

My name is Alex and I'm a second year Psych student at YSJ. I hope you've had a nice winter break, sorry for the delay answering!

I stayed in a standard ensuite at St John Central. Initially I applied for a large ensuite, which really is only a double bed and a bit more floor space, but got allocated a standard room. Upon enquiring I was informed there are few large ensuites and they were allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis (or disability basis, I think) and I didn't meet it in time, so they were snatched up quite quickly! I'm not sure if they still allocate them this way. What I did learn in my stay at SJC was there really are few double rooms or studio rooms, and studios are often allocated on the basis of people who have severe allergies, so they are not easy to get. I'm pretty sure there is only one floor that has large rooms, and so a handful of flats. Because of this I can't offer a description of my time in a large room but I can give you a rundown of the standard room!

Upon writing this I've noticed they've taken down the floorplans they had on the website when I applied. This makes sense because some of the rooms are laid out a bit differently, but I found most rooms were laid out like the one in the video and photo - my flat's rooms were. Including the large desk in both the standard and large room.

Obviously the main difference is the double bed. My initial want for this was because I would often have friends travelling from home to come and stay with me on some weekends so I wanted somewhere for them to sleep. When staying in a standard room I was given a single bed, however I did find there was more than enough room to fit a single camping bed or inflatable mattress, and could fit a double inflatable mattress at the end of the bed (with a bit of a squeeze!) There is more floor space in a large, but I found with a standard I had more than enough room to comfortably move around and do my yoga without kicking the wall too much! And squeezing in the mattress as stated before.

Secondly is the bathroom. The description for the large room states the shower is a wet room, not a single shower, which I would say is the most significant bonus! It certainly took me a while to get used to not hitting my elbows on the walls when I was in the shower haha

Overall I would say don't let what I have said put you off from applying to SJC. It's a fantastic building located in an amazing place, with a huge range of shops within walking distance and quick and easy access to the center, perfect if you love going out or want to explore the city frequently. And as I've mentioned, if you don't get a large room they may default to offering you a single. At this point, if you don't want a single, I would say contact them as soon as possible and they could offer you your second preference room.

If you want to know more about the general experience at SJC feel free to reply with any questions you might have! I can tell you the honest truths about my experiences there and little tips and tricks I learnt to make my stay smoother.

Good luck!

I'd say apply for the large if that's what you'd prefer, but make sure you like your second choice accommodation as well in case you can't get a large based on the availability. For something similar, The Grange accommodation has a large ensuite option in Grange House:
https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/study/accommodation/the-grange/

I'd also highly recommend visiting us on one of our Open Days so you can visit the accommodations. I know SJC only opens standard sized rooms on these days (unsure about The Grange) but liking the location of your accommodation is so important! Getting a single or double bed is not a lifechanging decision in this circumstance (and that's coming from someone who has slept in double beds their whole life!)

Hi there!

SJC has 7 floors, and there aren't any communal areas (except for the laundry facilities) - each flat has its own shared communal space (kitchen/living area).
