Last year of uni. Feeling extremely overwhelmed

Hi
I’m in my last year of university and for the last few weeks I’ve been finding uni in general extremely overwhelming. I think the pressure that this year counts to 70% of my degree has me extremely stressed. It hasn’t really helped that I emailed a lecturer because I didn't understand their content and they didn’t really help but guided me in an area I didn’t need the help with. since everyone is on Christmas break there’s no I could reach out to. I’m extremely afraid of failing. I generally do well but this is a module I’ve never done before and I have no confidence in my work. I probs shouldn’t have picked it for my last year but it’s too late for regrets now.

Is anyone in a similar position? What do you guys do when you feel extremely overwhelmed?

Hi there,

I'm really sorry to hear that your third year is getting really overwhelming. I would highly recommend reaching out to your universities student support services, they will be used to students struggling and will know the best way to help you and support you.

I would also ask to meet this tutor in person during their office hours so you can go over it together and ask as many questions as you wants- this may be a lot easier than emailing them and things perhaps getting missed.

I also wonder if you have a personal tutor separate to the tutor above? If so I would also ask to meet with them and say you're a bit overwhelmed and see what they can do to offer support. I felt a very similar way in my third year and i did these steps and everyone was so supportive, they did all they could to help me in any areas I needed so I could stay at a place where i felt confident in my abilities etc. All that needed to happen was for me to ask them.

I hope this helps and things get better for you,

Email your Personal Tutor and ask fir a time to come and talk to them - this is exactly what they are there for.

And - email 'Student Support'/'Student Wellbeing' at your Uni - you are not the first Finals students to feel like this, and they will know how to help.

Hi there,

I'm sorry you're feeling overwhelmed with your final year. I can definitely relate to this, as I am also a final year and finding it hard to find the motivation to get things done.

I'd reach out to your personal academic tutor. They are assigned to help you, so make full use of their knowledge and support! Make sure to reach out to your lecturers too, and don't be afraid to ask them multiple times if you need clarity or they weren't too helpful before. I used to feel like I was pestering them by asking more than once, but I realized that they are there to help me, and I should make sure to make the most out of that!

Besides reaching out for support for your module, do reach out for help from the wellbeing team or other student services at your university. They can provide support, advice, and guidance to other resources, and can aid you in making the most out of the remainder of your studies.

Do keep in mind that you are not alone. So many others feel and have felt the same in the past, and they have made it through. Reach out for support and do the best you can!

I hope this helps, and best of luck! 🙂

Hi there,

I'm really sorry to hear you're feeling this way, but please know you're not alone. Many students experience similar feelings, especially during the final year when everything feels so important. A good first step is to break your workload into smaller, manageable tasks. Creating a schedule or to-do list can help you prioritise and make the workload feel less overwhelming.

Connecting with your peers can also provide much-needed support. Forming study groups or simply talking with classmates about your struggles can offer new perspectives and make the material more understandable. Additionally, reaching out to your university’s support services, such as academic advisors or mental health counsellors, can provide valuable assistance even during breaks.
If the help from your lecturer wasn’t what you needed, try reaching out again with more specific questions or seek help from another faculty member. Sometimes, clarifying exactly where you're stuck can lead to more effective support. Don’t hesitate to utilise online resources or tutoring centres if they're available.

Remember to take care of yourself during this stressful time. Make sure you're getting enough rest, eating well, and taking short breaks to relax. Managing your well-being is crucial for maintaining your confidence and performance.

Lastly, try to stay positive and remind yourself of your past successes. One challenging module won't define your entire degree, and there are usually options for additional support or retakes if needed. You're capable of getting through this, one step at a time.

Hang in there, you’ve got this!

Hi!

I am also in my final year and am definitely feeling the pressure so can empathise. I have found that scheduling my time and setting goals has helped massively. For example, one day I will write 500 words but then the following day I am switching off completely and spending time with friends and family. Or I am revising for an exam today but will meet my friends for lunch to have a proper break.

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂
