Dropping out of uni

Original post by Jasmine244
I’m glad I’m not alone, I feel the exact same as you do. I’ve just started uni too and I’m seriously debating dropping out already. I’m certain that I don’t enjoy it and I’m not interested in my course, which I have already changed once before, but I just don’t know what to do. I also cry literally every night before uni and I’ve been really anxious since I started, though I’ve never suffered from anxiety before. The only thing that’s making me second guess myself is the fact that I don’t have a clue what I’d do with my life right now if I didn’t go to uni, but I know I don’t want to carry on the way I am now. Have you done anything about it yet, or do u plan on doing anything? Xxxx

did you end up dropping out of uni ? btw I’m asking bc I’m in a similar situation.

Hey, so I when I wrote this I think it was around October/November 2021 and I did end up dropping out in the December bcos I knew I 100% hated it and was certain I didn’t want to go back. So I got a part time job in the January and applied to a different uni that’s in my town centre and started there in September 2022 and I absolutely love it! I’m in my third year now doing my dissertation in history and I am so glad that I tried again bcos I knew deep down that I did want to go to uni but that first uni just want right for me. If you’re worried or stressed about uni, I know exactly how you feel, everything will work out in the end no matter what you choose to do xxx

The thing is I’m currently in my second year and my mental health is really low . I could apply for compelling reasons and drop out but I’m worried about being behind my peers as I will turn 21 in first year .Also if my compelling reasons form gets rejected it’s OVER for me, so dropping out now is a bit risky for me . All options seem quite *****y right now tbh idk if that’s the depression talking tho . I’m scared that I’m going to spend the next 9 months at home depressed bc there’s not really anything to look forward to . Thanks for responding tho , your response has motivated me.

I know how you feel about feeling like you’re falling behind. I felt the exact same way thinking that all of my school friends knew what they were doing with their lives when we turned 18, whether they went to uni or not, and it is such a horrible feeling, but just know it will get better no matter what.

I’m not too sure whether all universities are different I bother way they do things, but when I dropped out I submitted my form and had a short meeting just to finalise everything, would that not be an option you could take if you decide you want to drop out?

What course are you doing right now? It it a possibility that you could take a gap year (or years) and take that time for yourself to decide what you want to do. You are only 20, you have so so so much time to decide what you want to do, don’t feel like you’re falling behind because you’re not xxx

I’m 21 now and haven’t finished uni yet, all my school friends graduated last year and in the moment I felt as though that should be me, why didn’t I just stay and get through it, but there’s no point in thinking like that. You will know what’s right for you and you will make the right choices just believe in yourself and don’t doubt how you feel. it might sound silly, but what helped me make me decision was, I pretended that no one else existed in the world and if that affected my decision, I knew that I was only worried about disappointing my family and how others would see me, and I knew that I definitely wanted to drop out then, bcos I was only putting up with it to please others xxxxx
