Applying for dentistry in Ireland

Hi. Happy new year

I am a UK student. I was looking at the CAO points conversion. You need 4 a levels or 3 a levels and 1 as.

What about someone doing 3 a levels and has not done an EPQ or as level exam?

Thanks

Hi- happy new year!🥳

I’m thinking of applying for med this year as a UK student so I’ve done a bit of reading on CAO points (for both med and dentistry) and technically you can apply with 3 A levels however your application isn’t likely to be very competitive.

From what I can see you won’t be able to get enough CAO points for dentistry in ireland based on last years cut offs without doing an AS/EPQ/4th A level (plus one of your A levels being maths to gain the extra 25 points).

This is because dentistry (and medicine to be fair) is really competitive in ireland with the limited number of EU/UK places.
Whilst the cut offs may vary (especially with the addition of RCSI dentistry for this year) it’s probably not likely to lower by the number you need.

If you take a little look at the previous cut offs for both Trinity and Cork from 2024 they were 625 and 618. The maximum points are 625 🥲. Not only this but not every applicant at that cut off score gets a place because there are seemingly too many applicants at that exact score so they RANDOMLY select people who are tied.
I hope this was kind of helpful. As always, make sure you do your own research and you do never know with the cut offs.

If I may ask, what made you consider applying to ireland? (As someone who is also considering it)

Best of luck!!!

What is involved in the Irish dentistry application, is it simply A-Levels and AS, or is there anything else like Personal Statement, interviews etc.?

You need to meet any basic minimums and then yeah it’s just a levels. No personal statement, admissions tests or interviews. Keep in mind though that CAO points are extremely high for dentistry. You need Maths and a 4th A level/AS level or an EPQ. It’s a relatively easy process to apply though.
