Art Foundation Diploma 2025 Personal Statememt help!! (UAL, Kingston, Oxford Brookes)

So I’m planning on applying to 3 foundation courses for 2025 entry - UAL, Kingston, Oxford Brookes. I have started writing a personal statement and I’ve found loads of questions to answer and points I need to make but HOW am I supposed to write a comprehensive overview of me, my work and why i want to do foundation in as little as 300 words?? I’m currently at around 600 with no intro or conclusion and I’ve only talked about a couple of artists and the work I am doing currently in school (i’ve also talked about my job which is creative but not sure if this is essential?)

Kingston word limit is 300, UAL is 500 and Oxford Brookes has no guidelines that I can find :frown:

Any help would be appreciated!!

You don’t need to go into too much detail. You’ll have more chances to show how artists have influenced you and your creative process when you submit your portfolio.
For now all your PS needs to cover is:
1. why do you want to do this course (you can do a PS for each university for FAD so take advantage and mention something about their facilities or specialisms that you like at each)
2. A brief overview of your creative process and preferred media at the moment. Maybe mentioning a specific artist that has influenced you and one specific piece of work you have enjoyed (make sure that’s one that you are 100% sure will be in your portfolio)
3. Any short thoughts about what you want to do in 2026 after your FAD
Your PS isn’t an essay about art. It’s a statement about why YOU want to study art.

Hi,

It’s great that you’re thinking about applying to Oxford Brookes for the Foundation in Art and Design course! I hear you on the personal statement stress. Oxford Brookes doesn’t have a strict word count for their foundation personal statement, so you have a bit more flexibility and a chance to showcase your skills with the portfolio. That said, it still helps to keep things focused and clear.

You don’t need to go into much detail about every artist or piece you’ve made; that’s what your portfolio is for. The statement is more about why you want to study art and design, a little about your creative process, and what draws you to Brookes specifically. For example, you could mention that the Oxford Brookes FAD course offers a lot of studio space, interdisciplinary freedom, and strong progression support, whether you’re going into Interior Architecture, Fine Art, Graphic Design, etc. The course is based on the Headington campus and there’s access to great facilities and a creative student community, which can be a unique point to include. It’s also fine to briefly mention your creative job or relevant work experience. If it shows your passion for working with ideas or visuals, it can be relevant, and you should mention it, especially if it connects to your future goals post-FAD.

Hope that helps, and best of luck with your application and statement! If you have any other questions about Brookes, happy to help!

@plump-clearance, @OxfordBrookesDan - OP made this post 5 months ago, specifying they were applying for 2025 entry. The UCAS deadline has already passed so they will have submitted their PS months ago. Closed thread.
