is 27 references too many for a 3000 word essay

I've got a 3000-word essay due and I've included 27 references, and I cannot tell if that is too many. it is a "critically discuss" essay and it explicitly states I need to reference examples. I really can't tell if that is too much or just right

It depends on what you have used the references for. If they are 27 full on quotes then that is probably too much, but if the majority of references just gave you some information which you built on then thats fine.

I used to have about 50-60 references for my 4000-5000 word essays in my final year. I got 1sts in all my assignments. I'd imagine 27 is probably fine. You certainly aren't over doing it!
