how to go about a career change as a final year NHS student?

stuck in the nhs final year student

hi guys I’m in the UK doing a allied healthcare degree that I absolutely hate. i wanted to drop out in my first year but didn’t know what to do. However, through a miraculous series of fated events I have unfortunately now made it to my final year.

it’s been the worst, I’ve hated hospital placements, the toxic environments the job itself I hate. I just feel completely lost and hopeless. I’ve been hearing how it’s harder to get a job this year too, not that I even want one anyways but I have no idea what I could go into besides the nhs?

what would be a stable profession that I can progress in overtime better than the NHS band system? I have looked at a few grad schemes but I’m not sure about a lot of them and they seem incredibly competitive.

anyways this career thing has literally made me so depressed. I don’t even know how I’m gonna make it through this final year. I just wish there was something else I could go into straight after I graduate so that I won’t have to work at all in healthcare. I would love to work in a corporate setting.

anyways this career thing has literally made me so depressed almost suicidal which probs sounds incredibly dramatic. I don’t even know how I’m gonna make it through this final year. Radiography

It's a shame you are not enjoying your degree. Would you be interested in moving into areas such as mammography? The work environment is potentially less stressful than a radiography department and shift patterns are better (no night shifts). To qualify you could take a one-year postgrad course.

https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/wider-healthcare-team/roles-wider-healthcare-team/clinical-support-staff/mammographer

Other options you could consider to use your DR skills are private healthcare providers and vet practices (imaging is used on animals).

a lot of graduate roles don't require specific degrees, and there are many corporate roles out there - it's too broad for anyone to give you any suggestions. take a took at prospects.com and bright network - these websites are for graduates and you can do some career quizzes on there too. those aren't always accurate, but think about what you enjoy: do you like numbers, writing? read the job descriptions carefully and ask yourself if you would want to do that.

re graduate schemes being competitive. these can actually be advantagous for you compared to applying to immediate roles (jobs that have the usual process of CV + cover letter) after graduation because many of them don't look at the degree you've done, or even have a preference, or look at your CV, whereas immediate roles do and would probably prefer someone who didn't do a healthcare related degree for a corporate role. there are still some graduates schemes that are open now.

There are postgrad degree options that just require 'a degree' - Law as one example.
Law conversion courses: a guide to GDL and PGDLs | Prospects.ac.uk
MA Law | Study at Bristol | University of Bristol
Or other subjects/areas such as :
Childhood Studies MA | University of Leeds
MA/PGDip Social Work | Coventry University
MSc Crisis & Disaster Management Master's | University of Portsmouth
etc

This is very true! I have applied for a few grad schemes just waiting to get back from some. I think I’ll just graduate and keep applying to things. I’m sure I’ll get there at some point.
