transfer unis?

heyy, i currently study biomed with a foundation year at keele! i really like the university and have really stepped outside my comfort zone to gain independence + confidence by going there since none of my friends went. while i do like the uni, i feel a little lost as a person. i’ve made some friends but they’re very surface level friendships. the commute is also around 3 hours. i don’t mind the length of the commute but the cost is quite a bit. i spend around £20 to £23 commuting depending on the times i travel. i have considered transferring to bcu as it would be much cheaper to commute, a lot shorter and also my best friend goes there. however, i know the university’s reputation isn’t exactly great. i like keele a lot and don’t want to back out now because i’ve finally taken a chance to step out of my comfort zone. i’m a little unsure of what to do. some advice would be great xx
Have you spoken to all the Birmingham universities? BCU isn’t your only option and you get 5 choices on your UCAS application (might be worth prioritising getting your application completed and reference from Keele added before the deadline)

Hi there,

I'm sorry to read you are feeling a little lost.

Starting university can be a whirlwind of a time. There are so many things to do and so many changes happening that we can often feel lost or different to our usual selves. If you feel like you could benefit from chatting to someone, don't hesitate to reach out to your personal academic tutor, counselling, the wellbeing and support team, or someone else. They are there to help you, so do make sure to make use of them as a resource to help.

It might also be useful to talk to others about your ideas. Your personal academic tutor would be a great place to start, and the careers team wouldn't be a bad place to turn to. They would be able to highlight any differences between Keele and BCU that might impact your current trajectory and specific course, which would be important to consider.

From what you've written, it sounds like Keele is a great university with a number of benefits for you! The commute sounds like one of the biggest issues, but have you considered looking into accommodation instead? Friendships do take time to develop, which is something to keep in mind, and living closer may play a part to help that.

One thing I will say is don't make your decision based on where your friend goes. Think about the benefits for you, the opportunities and experiences for you, and the path you'd like to follow.

Best of luck, and I hope this helps a little! 🙂
