Help

After receiving my results, I found that I didn't pass one of my subjects, which I can totally blame myself for but also note that for the whole of year 12, teachers never bothered to show up, my sixth form had staffing issues, this meant we couldn’t resit our failed exams in year 13 due to this.
Anyways, I had 3 offers and chose UWL for Law foundation year because it was closer to home. Now, in my gap year, I kinda regret it after the bad reviews I’ve seen. I want to change universities but afraid that I might not get accepted anywhere due to my grade, and I don’t want to reject my accepted offer from UWL either. What can I do?

Are you going to re-sit your a-levels in your gap year?

So only 2 BTECs subjects essentially. That limits your choices considerably. You are not going to get an offer from any 'good for Law' Unis so you need to be very realistic about this. Unless you think you can get A grades in 3 A levels, and have the ££ to pay for this, then a Foundation course is probably your only realistic option.

I dont mind taking a foundation course, i just don’t want to risk declining my offer from UWL if I can’t get into anywhere else

You can't hang onto a confirmed place from last year and reapply to new choices -you would have to cancel that UWL place first. You could reapply to UWL as part of your new application but you have no guarantee of another offer. Just be aware that realistically what you could apply for with two BTECs isnt going to get any better than a Foundation at UWL.

Before you commit to any sort of foundation course or LLB, I would suggest you think very hard about what future career you might want. I don't think it's enough to say "something in law in the future". Whilst Law is an academic, not vocational, subject the majority of students do want to become a solicitor, barrister or actively use their law degree in some way. It is fiercely competitive to get into the profession at all levels and I think you appreciate that you are up against it, albeit due to some circumstances outside of your control.

What do you see yourself doing in the future?

You’re absolutely right, I wanted to do immigration law but they say the sector you want to do is never the one you qualify in so I wanted to keep my mind open.
