ChemEng at UoB or UoM

Growing up I have always wanted to go to Manchester Uni wanting to basically be independent, taking care of my self and exploring a new life in a new city, so Manchester has always been a dream for me (I live in Birmingham).

UoM is the birthplace of Chemical engineering and has a lot of industry connections but going to the open day just smashed my dreams. The people I spoke to looked deprived of life, like themselves did not like the course

(I am not saying it is an easy or happy course just that in comparison to other open days I went to the people there genuinely put me off)

And the people that were supposed to be guiding me around looked so lost and confused and they were supposed to be representing the uni and it just looked uncoordinated. The open day just left me with a really bad impression. Maybe the people I spoke to that received some sad news or something else.

I have been to UoB almost every academic year from year 8/9 and I have grown to love the university, the people and the lifestyle. And I am considering staying back home for uni and just getting an accommodation, but I don’t know

I don’t know exactly what university to pick, they require similar grades (A*AA) and I have already gotten an offer from UoB and an interview for Manchester.

It would be easier for me to land a job if I were to go UoM but I am worried that I will not be happy in my four years at uni. But at the same time, I don’t want to trade a “fun” experience for potential progress in my career

Considering they both have high grades, I can’t put one as my firm and the other as my backup.

Advice or recommendations would be nice.

Heyy there,
I completely understand how hard this decision must be and I really admire how much thought you’ve put into it as I faced the same situation when deciding between universities in a completely different country. At UoB, I’ve found more than just a great university. It’s a place that feels just like home 😊. The staff here are genuinely supportive and full of life, and the campus is always buzzing with energy as so many activities take place throughout the term.
Accommodations too are cozy and well-located surrounded by a lot of peaceful spots and student-friendly vibes. You’ll find a community that’s so warm and welcoming.
Your happiness during uni is what really matters. And I believe it’s not just about academics, but also feeling connected and supported. Trust your instincts and think about where you’ll feel most at home. Whatever you choose, you’ll do amazing. Wishing you all the best! 😊
