Can you do A Level Statistics and if so, how is it?

Hi, I'm y11 and thinking of doing standalone A Level Stats (if it exists which I'm not 100% sure about) as an extra A-level outside of school. I'm looking to do a Stats/ Finance based career and was wondering if it would help towards that? I will also be taking maths/ further maths and geography. I know an extra A-level is more work but I think it could be plausible for me, as I've taken extra GCSEs already and achieved grade 9s (including stats + travel and tourism). However I don't know if it's worth it? Again, it might not exist and if so never mind
Thank you!

Hi! As a year 13 student who does maths, I can tell you that there is statistics in the maths A-Level course. They used to do pure maths (algebra) and applied maths (stats and mechanics) as separate a levels but now there is just ‘Maths’ which combines both pure and applied maths.

Especially if you’re doing further maths (which also includes more statistics in it), personally I don’t think you’ll need an extra a level to do something like finance or accounting. I’m applying for economics and I have friends doing finance and accounting and we all do maths or further maths and that perfectly fine for Russel Group unis and even oxbridge.

If you will take Maths, Further maths and geography, that’s perfectly fine but if you wanted a 4th, consider economics if your school offers it. Otherwise 3 A levels is completely fine. Doing one outside of school is an extra pressure which I promise you won’t want in year 13.

So if you want to do 4, i would recommend doing them all in your school (Maths, FM, Geog and Econ) and don’t worry about the ‘statistics’ part too much because there is stats in the maths and FM courses and unis don’t expect a standalone stats qualification.

Sorry if this is confusing but hope it helps!!

As a year 13 A level Statistics student its a good a level to take and unis for the most part like it. One thing I will say is that there is only one youtube channel I know of that teaches the course so if you are going to do it make sure you go to a good college/sixth form where there is lots of support

I did A-Level statistics and did the exam for it last year. It's a decent A-Level which I quite enjoyed but could be challenging as something to study outside of college as it doesn't really have an official textbook and there are limited resources. You sound like a student who'd be able to do it - I never did GCSE statistics and only got a 7 in Maths I had people at college doing a similar selection of A-Levels to you (including stats as their 4th) and they really enjoyed it. If you're looking for resources, check out this YouTube channel which has the entire A-Level course on it - https://www.youtube.com/@osfcstatistics8149 and it's always a good idea to have a look at the spec too.
