The New Year – Let’s talk about it

We would like to wish you all the best for the new year. At PAPYRUS HOPELINE247 we recognise the new year is not always a happy time and can be a challenge for many. Feelings of loneliness and isolation are normal as routines settle back into place. There can also be big expectations to meet certain targets and goals as we head into a new year. We have a couple of suggestions below that could help you navigate this time of year.

💜Create a Routine: A simple daily routine can provide stability and comfort. Regular sleep, healthy meals, and small activities like a walk or a cup of tea can make a difference.

💜Set Small Goals: It could be something as simple as organizing a shelf, trying a new recipe, or planning a cozy evening for yourself.

We would love to hear what suggestions you have for managing your mental health at this time. Share your ideas with us all in the comments below 👇 you never know who you might inspire.

I like to make sure that I go out for a walk in the morning (regardless of the weather)
Things that help me...

Meditation (just 10mins each day, I love the mountain visualisation meditation)

Yoga (I try to go twice a week)

Running (I am slow but always feel better after a run it helps clear my head from overthinking)

Hugging my dog as often as possible

Thank you for sharing! A morning walk, regardless of the weather 🌧️🌞, is such a fantastic way to start the day. It’s a simple yet effective way to clear your mind and get some fresh air, which can make a significant difference in mental well-being😊.

Thank you for the insightful suggestions! Your approach to mental health is inspiring, especially the combination of meditation, yoga, and running 🏃. A balanced routine really helps with clearing the mind and managing stress😊. And of course, spending time with pets 🐾 brings so much comfort and support. These tips will surely be valuable to many.
small goals are not enough. i need something to justify my existence
how do i deal with the love of my life being engaged to someone else? what do i do when i've thrown away innumerable chances and wasted my potential and noone seemed to care? what do i do when my closest friends just get bored of me and stop talking to me, like multiple different best friends over the course of a decade?

That sounds amazing that you go out for a walk regardless of the weather. Walking can help to release feel-good hormones which in turn can help to improve your mood and help you to cope better with difficult times as well as being a great form of exercise too!😀

It’s deeply painful to feel this way, and it’s completely normal to struggle when things don’t go as hoped, whether with love or friendships.
Grief is part of the process, and it’s okay to feel hurt. This doesn’t define your worth. Potential hasn’t been wasted, and life doesn’t always follow a set path. It’s never too late to start over, even with small steps forward.
If friendships have drifted, reflecting on whether those connections were truly supportive might help. People grow apart, but that doesn’t mean meaningful relationships aren’t possible.
Talking to someone can make a big difference. Reaching out to a therapist or counselor could offer support. Services like Samaritans (116 123) or Crisis Text Line are available for immediate help.
Healing takes time, and there’s no need to go through it alone.

I always give myself Saturdays days off so I can watch TV, play games, or whatever.
I also always videocall my best friend once or twice a week- I'm not a very social person, but catching up with my favourite people is always lovely.
(Routine has always been a big source of comfort for me, so having just this is enough to keep me motivated and go through the week!)

Feeling this way is incredibly tough, and it’s important to reach out for support. If thoughts of not wanting to be here are present, PAPYRUS (0800 068 4141) is available 24/7 to offer confidential support for young people.
Support is available, and reaching out can make a big difference. You don’t have to face this alone.

Thank you for sharing that. Those are really good ways to take care of yourself and support your mental health. Having a routine, like giving yourself Saturdays off and staying connected with your best friend 👯*♂️, provides stability and comfort. It’s great that these practices help you stay motivated and feel recharged. Self-care like this can make a big difference in managing mental well-being.

Walking is good to clear your mind, just being out in Nature and breathing in good fresh air, even when it's cold can support wellbeing. It's great that you have found this to help.
