I haven't done it as I did the LPC but you can get student finance if you do a dissertation alongside the SQE to make it a masters.

Hi. I have just completed my third year with a mid 2:1 and would like to work for the cps. Unfortunately due to personal circumstances I have not been able to complete much work experience as I'm a single mum who works part time and I volunteer for my local charity so everything is hectic. Could you offer any advice on what I need to do so I may apply next year.

Hi, to apply for the solicitor route for a 2027 start you must have:
Undergraduate degree
You must hold a minimum of a 2:2 university undergraduate degree. This doesn’t need to be in law, we consider equivalent undergraduate degrees.

If you have completed the Legal Practice Course and have an undergraduate degree at a minimum of a 2:2 in a subject other than law, you must have completed one of the following conversion courses:
· Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)
· Common Professional Examination (CPE)
If you have opted for the Solicitor Qualifying Exams (SQE) route, a conversion course isn’t required. We accept non-law degrees along with successful SQE 1 and 2 results, without the GLD or CPE.

Postgraduate qualifications
You must have successfully completed, or be due to complete, the Law Practice Course or Solicitor Qualifying Exams 1 and 2 to be able to start the legal trainee scheme in October 2027.

You must provide your qualifications to our recruitment team by 1 September 2027. If you’re unable to provide confirmation of passing your LPC or SQE by this time, you’re removed from the process.

How do you tailor your CV and cover letter? Can you share some timelines, personal anecdotes, or any other experiences?

Hi there!
I'm a final-year law student looking to apply for the Oct 2026 start CPS Legal Trainee Scheme!
Looking for advice and others who are planning to apply!
Hi. Basically, I want to do Law. I'm in Year 12 and I want to do Law because I'm really, really passionate about it. I want to do Commercial Law. My GCSEs are like Bs and Cs in English, Maths and Science, Geography, and all the rest. For my A-Levels, I do English Lit, Sociology, and Health and Social Care. I'm predicted 1A star, an A, and a distinction star. That's my predicted so far, what they expect me to get. I really want to do well and get into a good hostel group uni. Not maybe the top ones, but the mid-top ones like Leeds, Exeter, Sheffield, and Liverpool. Do you think that's possible? also i checked requiremnt they do accept one btec

Hi venerable-derail, 👋

It's great to hear you are interested in studying Law at Sheffield. University of Sheffield is such a great university, which is why I did my undergraduate degree here as well as my Master's and now PhD in English Literature. 😄

Your grade predictions are great and would be ideal for this course. I also was accepted onto my course with a mixture of A-level and BTEC grades (I got two Bs and then D*D*). I have also found that when you firm Sheffield as your top choice they can be lenient when it comes to results day. Both myself and my partner (who did chemical engineering) got slightly lower than expected grades at A-level, but, as we both firmed Sheffield, we were still offered our places! 🙌

The Law undergrad course at Sheffield is great: the LLB degrees satisfy the 'foundations of legal knowledge' set by the Bar Standards Board. If you plan to be a solicitor, you can also complete your Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) with the University of Law, right here at the University of Sheffield. You can also do real client work, advise start-ups and small businesses, and offer advice that can make a positive difference to the people of Sheffield, all through our many pro bono schemes.

If you want to hear more about Law at Sheffield from one of our student ambassadors currently on the course, you can send them a message here!

Or if you have any general questions about studying at/in Sheffield, please let me know and I would be more than happy to help! 😊

Best of luck to you.

All best wishes,
Phoebe

Hey venerable-derail,👋

Yeah for sure, like I said, I got lower than expected grades and I was still offered a place as I firmed Sheffield. And honestly it was the best decision I could have made. The University is amazing, everyone is so friendly and supportive and there's so many opportunities to meet new people such as in student societies, and faculty events etc. 😀

The student accommodation is great as there is so much choice. You can choose whether you want an ensuite room, or even a whole studio/flat to yourself if you'd prefer. I went to student accomm in my undergrad and decided to stay for the full three years as I enjoyed it so much, everyone was so friendly, and the location is amazing. It's right next to the Botanical gardens and near Endcliffe park too. It's also really close to lots of cute cafes, shops, food places etc!

The accommodation also has dedicated flats for LGBTQ+, as well as same-sex accommodation if you would prefer that. And you are guaranteed to be offered a place of residence, if you apply by a certain date.

Please let me know if you have anymore specific questions and I would be more than happy to help! 👋

All best wishes,
Phoebe
