hi current y12 i take all humanities (hist, politics, eng lit, philosophy) so experiences may vary

its really nice so far. i honestly think laet is like the perfect balance between like i actually want to go to a top 10 uni/degree apprenticeship whatever and like fun. everyone here is just like fun tbh, i have some friends who go NCS LAES and i feel like (obvi biased) but i feel like the people there wouldnt be as unserious in a good way

teaching is on the most part good i feel

the skl puts up weekly like opportunities and stuff to apply to. theyre usually more stem oriented i feel like medicine finance, theres a lot of law stuff too tho. for politics and english theyre having 2 internal essay comps rn which i feel like would be nice to mention on the ps to say you "won" (just dont say like its an in school i guess since it seems less impressive)

only thing thats a bit like euahdh is that since u take 4 alevels at start of y12 you only get 4 free periods every 2 weeks. and its forced revision too like you go to study space and you have to revise there in silence. no phones too but they do allow you to play music w headphones so its not the end of the world. i assume its similar for other top sixth forms too, and if you drop a subject in y13 im pretty sure every single period u had for that subject would become a study space so honestly im waiting bc i can probably bang out most of my revision for the day and like revise 1/2 hours at home maybe

also just want to be fr the clubs r kind of dead. i guess like debate club is cool for a bit but like most of them to me r just an escape from doing a period 1 lesson. societies r probably better but i wouldnt know since i never joined one, but christsoc seems quite active and stuff i think they did some worship thing at skl and charity stuff. house system is useless too.

"event" days like 90s day and culture day r so live here too

idk if i have much to complain ab being here rlly

thanks alot, also i have a couple other questions

1.

apparently here's an iv league program I'm really interested into applying to one so I fso how many people attend the club?

2.

is everyone in the school nice?

3.

are there a lot of people from like hackney and other areas or mainly just totenham?

4.

is it a big school, like could you go a day without seeing someone?

5.

can you use the bathroom during class?

6.

whats the boys dress code?

7.

what happens during the asslingment consulment meeting?

8.

if you get a conditional offer, the meet the requirements how does the enrolment situation work, is it a case of who gets to the school first?

9.

are teachers really strict?

10.

can you switch subjects?

sorry for all the questions by the way its just I really really wanna go, I got an interview next week, and just wanted to see how it is for students

1) ive seen programs that help in applications to harvard and other things such as sutton trust etc
2) Mixed, generally good
3) Ive seen people from all over london, including hackney, leyton and south
4) Its not the largest, but still decently sized. You deffo will see someone in lunchtime or break tho
5) Depends on the teacher
6) Smart casual. I just wear trousers, white shirt and jumper. Ive seen some man come in suits
7) (asslingment😂) They basically make sure you 'align' with their 4 core values and you talk to them about your aspirations and your special item.
8) Add up your top 8 gcse grades and divide by 8 to get a mean. If its over 8 you come first thing at 9 (or if you are FSM or something, read the criteria on the website ) if its over 7.75 you go 10, if 7.5 then you go 11 and if less than that but above minimum req then you come at 12, but the earlier you come the more chance you have of getting the subjects u want.
9) The teachers I have a pretty chill
10) They give you the option to a couple weeks into year 12 but this is dependant on the waiting list and demand of that subject. STEM tends to get full quite early on

1.

sorry i dont do any of the US uni stuff so i wouldnt know of how many! tho for reference i dont know anyone who does (tho ofc they might not all tell me). i doubt youll be alone for us application stuff tho, the school has apparently sent off a fair bit of students to ivy league stuff like harvard, and theres a talk w an laet alumni at harvard soon for students, so i imagine theres a decent bit of interest in it

2.

yes i do think so. its kind of like ur average secondary school but everyones acc like nice. like i cant think of a single rude experience ive had w someone and im like prime bullying material im ngl. theres mandem like at secondary but if the roadmen generally kept to themselves, mostly nice and very smart.

3.

i guess there is but like it is slightly dominated by north london from what i can tell

4.

yes and no i guess. the amount of students is quite big (425 rn alone in y12, and break time is both y12+13 so u can imagine) but the school isnt like huge or whatever so if you like to take walks around the school youll see a fair chunk of people, but even nowt theres people to me who r like ? do u even go here or

5.

idk i dont think anyones ever asked 😭 i imagine not tho if youre desperate i doubt theyll let u **** urself. in study space u can tho, tho it might depend whos leading it. ive walked out of study space a fair few times without asking the teacher

6.

smart casual, tho i really do feel like theres sm leniency. i imagine collared shirts jumpers whatnot. they dont let stuff like hoodies obviously but if your outfit could reasonably look as if youre going to work then i doubt youll get caught out. like for example a fair bit of guys wear those like yk the yellow timbs and idk if its just me but it doesnt scream like professional but its also probably ntd

7.

im pretty sure the gist was showin you around the school like canteen to study space n whatnot and a student panel to ask questions to and they talk ab laet n stuff. im helping out this yr and the information thing w our roles doesnt seem to contradict this

8.

they do enrolment based on ur gcse average grade between ur top 8 gcses. theyll def give u an email outlining everything u need to worry ab nearer to enrolment day but general gist the higher average grade u get the earlier u can come in the group and be

9.

strict varies by teacher. generally strict as in they want you to like not be behind, do ur hw and remember the key points of ur previous lessons. theyre not strict otherwise tho they all seem like normal adjusted adults. some will be strict on no phones tho

10.

first few weeks (i think or earlier) they let u like ask to change w a reason why and they can decline it. after it no

edit: user @anasn has formally requested i change "roadmen" to mandem instead

Just wondering how music and creative subjects are in a stem environment? do you have many music opportunities like studio time etc?

Heyy, honestly the music department is genuinely one of the best aspects of the school. The music room is basically always open so you will definitely get studio time aswell. Even if you dont do music, like me, there are loads of opportunities to get involed in external music opportunities which I definitely take advantage of. LAET is sponsored by highgate which is a private school so most activities they have are open to us aswell. For example, about two weeks ago I sung a mozart requiem with highgate at southwark cathedral.

Definitely! I was a beginner on the guitar too when I started LAET but the school offer music lessons in a bunch of instruments like guitar piano saxophone drums violin which is actually awesome. Theyre also alot cheaper compared to if you were to go somewhere external and if you have a bursary is even less. There is alot of voulenteering opportunities with feeder secondary and primary schools in the area for all sorts of stuff most of it is like a mentoring thing though. In terms of sports they have clubs after school for football, basketball, kickboxing and some other stuff which i've forgotten 😭 but if theres a sport you want to do that they dont offer its 100% possible to talk to a teacher and they can help you with starting it up.

nppp! Ik the football and kickboxing are separated but im not sure about basketball. I think it just depends on how many girls want to participate so if its mixed this year that doesnt mean it will also be mixed next year
