The University of Edinburgh, The University of Manchester, The University of Glasgow

I’m thinking of studying education at the graduate level, and I have some questions. I’m interested in three universities:

The University of Edinburgh
The University of Manchester
The University of Glasgow

From a native perspective, are there significant differences in the academic level between these universities? Since I’m Japanese, could you explain the differences between them in a way that’s easy to understand?

Hi, so all of these universities have good reputation - you might hear people say this is because they are "in the Russell group". Russell group means these universities produce lots of good research, and often means these universities are very old (a good thing) and prestigious. Any of these universities are a good choice.

Also the university of Edinburgh and the university of Glasgow are in Scotland, which means undergraduate degrees are 4 years long (University of Manchester is in England where degrees are 3 years long). So you will pay less in fees in England. If you are doing a Master's degree (MSc, MA etc.) the course fees are the same in England and Scotland because the course lasts 1 year.

I go to the University of Glasgow and I love it here, we have loads of societies and a very active and fun Japan society! 🙂 🙂 We have lots of sports societies and a mountaineering club if you'd like to explore Scotland's hills and mountains while you're here! We also have loads of Ceilidhs (traditional Scottish dance) here - very fun and good for making friends

If you're studying science Glasgow is much better for this than Edinburgh. (I've heard this from other students) I don't know about Manchester.

Thanks for the info! It's great to know all three universities have strong reputations. Glasgow sounds amazing, especially with its active Japan society and cultural events like Ceilidhs! I'm considering a Master's, so the fee difference doesn't apply, but it's good to hear Glasgow is strong in science. I’ll definitely think about it—thank you! 🥺
