Fashion Personal Statement

With the UCAS application deadline approaching I’m sure many of you are getting your applications ready including writing your personal statements.

Whether you’ve already started writing, or need to get going, there’s still time to get a perfect statement together.

Your main aim in your statement is to show your enthusiasm and passion for your chosen subject, which you can evidence through your school and college life, experiences, achievements and personal interests.
Now for a fashion specific statement, you want to avoid stating that you have a ‘passion for fashion’, as this is an overused phrase, and you want your writing to stand out. Instead, you can try to evidence your passion with things you’ve done, like previous education and experience. Anyone can say they like a subject, but showing a further interest can boost your statement.

You may be stuck for things to include, especially if you’re applying for a subject you haven’t studied before. Before starting uni, I had never studied fashion at any educational level before, so I initially thought I didn’t have anything to include. But there may be some personal interest and hobbies that you can link back to your chosen subject. For example, I love second hand shopping and thrifting in my spare time, and I included in my statement how I loved to shop sustainably and style new outfits from old clothes, which is something I wanted to investigate more at university.
So don’t be afraid to include personal interests or niche hobbies, as they will help make your application more unique!

It can also be effective to include your future plans at the end of your statement to show sense of direction for after your degree. This goal will probably change throughout your uni studies, but it’s a great addition to add in where you see yourself in the future. Maybe you’re the next Chanel or Louis Vuitton, or perhaps you have plans to start your own independent fashion brand. Whatever it may be, it can further emphasize your love of the subject and why studying it at degree level is the right thing for you.

And possibly the most important advice I could give is to be genuine in your writing and make sure your unique voice is coming through. Admissions teams want to get to know you, so help them out and show off your best self!

Good luck!

How does BCU score the PS for fashion applications?

Hi @PQ

Just an update on your previous question...

The Fashion Design course at BCU requires a personal statement that contains details you would expect in any typical statement, including career plans, work experiences and achievements.

The course also requires a portfolio, which is requested after the initial personal statement is submitted.

Unfortunately, I do not know how the personal statement and portfolio are used in making decisions towards applications, or if there are any further specific things the course expects to see in an applicant's statement other than what is stated on the BCU website.

I hope this answers your question - but let me know if you'd like some more information. 🙂
