what to do if you don't go to college or have a job

What would happen if I left school passes all my GCSEs and didn't go to a college and don't have a job. I'm asking for a friend genuinely I'm worried about him not actually having good future and nobody seems to be looking out for him so I kinda need some advice. on what to say to him he left school in 2024 and has been doing nothing at all he does nothing all day he literally does nothing with his life. it seems as if he doesn't know what to do or what he should do. all of the jobs he's applied for have rejected him he hasn't even got to an interview. as I said im asking for a friend !!!

If it's in England, then:

You can leave school on the last Friday in June if you’ll be 16 by the end of the summer holidays.
You must then do one of the following until you’re 18:

stay in full-time education, for example at a college

spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering, while in part-time education or training

You are trying to be a good friend, but I wonder why he didn't have anything lined up before leaving school, as these have been the rules for a few years. Doesn't his family support him? Can he go to the Job Centre or speak with a former teacher who could advise him?

The short answer is nothing happens, then people inevitably get sick of you in some form and you become destitute/homeless then die. Assuming you don't go to college, work or something similar. Applying for benefits is an option but under 18s generally don't get much/anything and get instantly forced into some sort of training scheme, they v much don't let you stay home and chill out.

I did much the same because I really, really hated school and they hated me. I left at 15 as soon as my last standard grade was done, went to college and that ended v quick because I still had the same terrible 15yo attitude I did at school so I was left in that same 'Well now what the hell is there?' limbo time. I did actually interview for and secure a full time job but then had to be told a little down the line that 15 year olds can't do that 😒

Not that any of this tale is entirely relevant, but I can relate to how teens get themselves in this situation.

He needs to get something on his resume, even if it's a volunteering or a part-time job at a fast food place. That shows employers he's willing to work. Maybe suggest looking into apprenticeships or trade schools, not everyone needs uni.
