Hey, I studied at DMU but i was doing a very different course to you (Game Art) so my perspectives might differ a lot from your experience.
DMU campus is generally very modern, tidy and well-kitted. DMU have good facilities and resources. Access to IT equipment and other practical resources was always very good especially comparatively to other universities.
I accessed some university services like autism assessment screening, autism support sessions and then DSA eligibility screening and these were really good. I was screened quickly and their resources were good quality. I think waiting lists for things like mental health support are longer but they aim to respond to all inquiries fairly quickly and are generally pretty good. They have good resources for financial support etc too.
My course was part of the Computing, Engineering and Media faculty and I felt as though they could've taken more steps to integrate my course with other similar courses and content. I.e. shared lectures with game development and games programming students. Instead, we were very insular as a course and mostly confined to one building for all our sessions. I felt this made it more difficult to meet people and caused social strains within my course as if you fell out with someone, everyone would know about it. From what I've heard, they've made steps to improve this since I left. My lecturers generally did their best and were good teachers, mostly let down by their own lack of industry experience rather than their ability to teach. I built good relationships with lecturers and peers at uni. But this is very course-specific, so this is the least likely to apply to you.
I struggled with Leicester as a city. I found that I felt unsafe, regularly, even on campus. There was security, but I was also often approached by homeless people asking me for money or trying to get me to go to a cash machine while on campus. One time someone who was on drugs tailed a student into our university building and had to be escorted out by security. I was threatened, shouted at, and followed several times during my time in Leicester. Police showed up at my door when i lived off-campus in 2nd year. I once saw a forensics van parked up my road on the way to university. Most girls I knew didn't go anywhere alone.
If nothing else this was my main issue with DMU. I genuinely believe my course was good and the university provide good resources. I would (and regularly do!) honestly still recommend my course. I really do think DMU are a well-equipped and good university. But I don't think I could live in Leicester again.
