English and Creative Writing - which uni?

Hi everyone,

I am looking to study English and Creative Writing once I've finished college, but I'm not sure where to go. I would like to take a semester or year abroad in either the US or Canada, so having that opportunity for me on my course is very important to me. I also prefer coursework over exams, so it would be nice if the course was evenly split or more coursework-based, but I don't really mind. Additionally I can be a little picky about accomodation (I'm autistic so I need an environment I will feel comfortable in), but as long as it is isn't the bare minimum I'm not overly worried. What universities would you suggest looking into, with emphasis upon it being a good university for my course and being able to offer me a year abroad for my course? I've looked into Warwick and Bath Spa but I'm not settling on any just yet until I've accumulated different options.

Any suggestions or personal experiences to tell would be immensely appreciated. Thank you so much!
Hi @snow-bear
At the University of Southampton we offer BA English and Creative Writing - you can check out the course information here if you want to find out more!
I'm a current English Language and Linguistics student and our courses are similar in terms of structure and assessment - exams are rare with this type of degree (I personally have zero exams for all three years) and class sizes are smaller and less demanding - you will usually have four lecturers and four seminars a week.
We offer a wide range of accommodation which may suit you if you have more specific needs, for example, same-gender, non-alcoholic, quiet options, as well as a range in terms of location and size. I can give you further information on which University of Southampton accommodation would be right for you if you let me know what specific requirements you have!
Good luck with your application!

Hi there,

I'm a student here at Cardiff and love it! It's the perfect size city and place to be a student (in my opinion of course haha). Cardiff is "placed 4th in the UK for research impact and 5th for research power in English Language and Literature (REF 2021)", with an outstanding "Creative Writing team regularly scoop national and international awards for their novels and poetry and collectively share experience in theatre, television and film". Here is the link to the course page, where you'll also see that we do offer terms/years abroad. My friend did a year abroad in Canada and she had the best time, it's such a good experience.

With regards to accommodation, we have a new accommodation block called Adam Street Gardens which is probably the closest to the English building as well. Adam Street Gardens is modern and well-equipped, with communal areas, a gym, and optional en-suite rooms. It is privately managed by Unite, however you can be referred by Cardiff University, as it is listed in their accommodations. You might also want to look into private accommodations as well if you are looking for something specific, I stayed in private accommodation in my first year and liked that it was quieter, more modern, and well-equipped with a variety of spaces. Although saying this, since I was in first year many of the Uni blocks have been modernised/renovated.

If there is anything I can help with any further, or any questions you have please don't hesitate to ask.

Hello snow bear :rave:
It’s so lovely to hear you want to study English and creative writing, I studied English as an undergraduate, then two masters degrees in it and now I’m currently doing a PhD in English. I absolutely love it and I am sure you will too!
I am currently at the university of Chester which I’m finding to be a brilliant university. Chester offers an undergraduate degree consisting of English and creative writing combined, so you will do modules in both disciplines. It’s more weighted towards the coursework side, which might suit you best from what you any in your post? The English department is absolutely brilliant, our tutors are really supportive and enthusiastic and want to do their utmost to help you achieve your potential. Outside of the department there is a huge range of academic support available. For example, the academic skills team offer one to one appointments to help with anything from writing skills, to researching, time management, essay planning etc and also do a skills pod covering most of the common issues students have. Each subject area has its own subject specific librarian to support with your research. Outside of academic support there is a student services team who advise on anything and everything - finance, careers and employability, accommodation etc.
The accommodation at Chester is mostly on campus - there are some rooms in the city centre too and these are about a 15 minute walk from the main campus. The accommodation is a mix of catered and non catered, and en suite as well as shared with a small group of other students. If you have any specific requirements, the accommodation team are brilliant at finding you a room that fits you perfectly.
Why not pop along to one of Chester’s open days? The next one is on 18th January but we have them really regularly throughout the year. You will have the opportunity to meet the English tutors and see the department, as well as talk to all the student support staff, including the accommodation team. Students also take tours around the campus and the accommodation so you can see everything Chester has to offer and ask the questions you have to find out what it’s like from a student perspective.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask anything else,
Best of luck with your academic journey,
Jess
