Accomodation for students if insurance choice

My son is considering Exeter as his insurance offer, but his concern is accomodation, as the university only guarantees those for whom it is a first choice. Ive asked the university accommodation service and they won’t disclose, even roughly, what proportion of students get halls accommodation when it isnt their first choice. I’d be interested in the experience of current students. Many thanks

I don't know the answer to your question, I'm afraid, but have just updated the title of this thread (replacing "through clearing" with "if insurance choice") to avoid any confusion. Selecting a conditional offer as your insurance choice is a very different process from applying to a university via Clearing.
Hi Rachel CS

I appreciate your concerns regarding accomodation when using Exeter as an insurance choice. Depending on the qualifications your son is taking and when those results come out he may know if he has a place at Exeter before the main A-level results day in which case he may be able to apply sooner for University accomodation. If he is taking A-levels then he should find out on results day if he has a place at the first choice uni or the insurance choice with us.

The accomodation team do provide a dedicated webpage for those that receive a confirmed place through clearing or coming to Exeter as their insurance choice. https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/accommodation/applyingandpaying/clearing/
From the page above you can see that you may need to wait for the Accomodation system to be updated with your son's offer and then he could proceed to apply to University accomodation. This is in the "Advice for applicants" "Insurance/Clearing applicants" section of the page.

You can also see updates on the above webpage to show how quickly applicants were advised to start looking at Private accomodation options in the City.

I'm sorry I can't provide the specific stats you were looking for above. You may find the ratio table on this page relatively helpful. https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/accommodation/applyingandpaying/aboutyouroffer/

Hopefully your post may also prompt recent students who have joined through clearing or as an insurance choice to share their experiences here.
