Career choices

Hi I am in Year 10 I know its a bit early but and I was wondering what most people would do, if say I really wanted to be a vet but I didn't get any offers, should I take a gap year and reapply or if I should do another career related to the a levels I took, especially if I don't get it twice.
But another problem was that I am fine in taking a gap year but it's just that if I do choose to change careers I just don't know what to do after that because of the a levels that I have chosen are to do with medicine which is a career I am not very fond of. And I feel like it's too late to do anything else because I don't think I can.
What would you guys do?

I'm currently in my gap year, wrapping up my uni prep for a September 2025 start. I would absolutely recommend taking a gap year to give you chance to decide what you want to do and reflect on the grades that you achieve. You could look into doing other level 3 courses (a-level equivalent) if you feel you need to, or you could find work to save money for university and build up some savings. As for worrying about not getting offers, have a look at specific course entry requirements and compare them to your (predicted/achieved) grades so far. It'll give you a realistic idea of what to expect.

Hi, I was in a similar situation to you, what I did and suggest is apply to something this year as a backup which you wouldn’t mind doing but keep the gap year and vet in the back of your mind, and start working super hard now and get your grades up so u can take that gap year and get into vet. Worst case scenario you do not get the grades you what but will still have a uni offer that you can do. Good luck

If you really want to be a vet take a gap year! If during this time you change your mind other careers and degrees are open to you. It’s not because you’re doing science A levels that you can’t do something like law. One of my children did. It all depends on the university but a number of very good ones will consider you for such a degree without the literature or history A levels that some assume are compulsory. Maths and sciences in general teach analytical skills that are essential in degrees such as law. They teach you how to retain the essential information and discard the unnecessary. So don’t think that because you have studied all sciences up to this point that your horizons are limited. If you’d done only arts subjects your choices would be narrower.
