Is anorexia a physical condition? Because my GP is giving me misinformation and it's

Annoying me

I'm not a medical professional but I always thought it was a psychiatric condition - it's defined in terms of the person's feelings and behaviour towards food and whether their eating is problematic. That said BMI is a major indicator, because if a person's BMI is low enough that it is damaging their health, it's definitely problematic.

technically, no. it's considered a mental illness but it has physical symptoms. weight loss is a symptom.
but you can be underweight and not anorexic. but a lot of doctors just don't get it.

btw i'm curious, what did your doctor tell you? bc they spread so much disinformation about it and will literally try to push a diagnosis/label on anyone

It can be both physical and mental and in that case the treatment should be on both aspects.

However, it is not always the case. I was severely underweight and didn't have an eating disorder (lowest BMI record was 14.5). Doctors talked about eating disorders with me all my childhood and teenage years. Being underweight doesn't mean you are anorexic and being anorexic doesn't mean you have to be underweight. I had a friend at school who was anorexic and she was normal weight and teachers didn't think she was anorexic until she was hospitalized for that.

They would say that anorexia is not a mental condition but I know it is. It doesn't involve talking therapy but I know it does. I don't know what kind of doctor I have. It's like I know more than they do.

I can.

Maybe this is how doctors talk to get you to agree to treatment for an eating disorder. This is just the way some people talk.

Well, I don't think lying is the right way.

of course it is, sorry but your doctor is an idiot. anorexia doesn't magically make you lose weight, it's not a physical illness that literally eats away at your body... consider seeing a different doctor
