Worrying about getting older

I’m 21 soon to be 22 and I’m really worried about getting older atm.

Like I keep getting upset about the fact that in a couple more years I’ll be in my mid 20s. I don’t feel like I’ve achieved much yet, I’ve started uni twice so moved away from home twice but that’s it. I’ve had one job during my break year from uni and that year I spent trying to get out of depression. I’m being tested for adhd soon by my uni so I’m hoping that diagnosis will make things make sense as to why I feel so behind everyone else.

Did anyone else worry about their age at 21/22? Thanks

Unfortunately nobody is getting any younger.

We are all getting older each day.

I don't worry about my own age.

I would just get on with your life and enjoy it while you are able to.
Well my 17 year old told me yesterday that he feels old, and my 19 year old has been complaining about being old since she turned 18.

😑

Youth is wasted on the young. Stop worrying about your age and start living, so that when you're actually old you can look back on your life and realise you lived a full one.

You say you've not achieved much yet - the good news is you're actually still young, so get out there and achieve stuff.

This is absolutely right. Lots of people worry about their age when they turn 20, and indeed at many other ages. At any given point you'll have a tendency to look back on previous years and think that you should have done more, or think about how different things would have been if you could go back with the mindset that you have now. But the catch is that you will continue to do that when you're 25, 30 etc. That should tell you that you actually have a lot of time now to make these changes that you want to make. And you do. At 21 you really are basically still a child in so many ways. Physiologically your brain literally still isn't fully developed (that doesn't happen until your mid to late 20s). You mention achievements but it isn't so much about achievements as experiences. You still have a lot of developing and maturing to do at your age. Your hobbies, interests, friends and ambitions are all likely to change in the next five, ten or more years. Nothing is set in stone and things can change so dramatically in that time. Your focus needs to be on now rather than the past. When you are 30 or 40 you will look back on being 21 and realise how much relative time and freedom you had, so do your future self a favour and start setting the example right now.

You're not getting old. You have plenty of time to achieve things.

No? What’s there for me to worry about? I’m 24 turning 25 later this year so I’m already hitting my “prime twenties” I hope to settle down with the girl that I agonisingly waited for patiently for the past 3 and half years, I haven’t been able to do my driving due to my medical condition and I want to work towards getting my license this summer. I have completed university and graduated nearly 20 months ago yet finding a Job within this market is inflated and broad. The way I think of it makes me closer to being able to settle down and also wanting to have kids of my own which makes it exciting.

As a middle-aged parent, I can definitely say youth is wasted on the young! 😉

Being a teen or in your 20s today is possibly much harder than when your parents were a similar age. Social media gives an unrealistic view of 'achievement' and 'success' and young people can feel pressured to achieve or succeed based on what their peers seem to post.

This can happen even when you get to 50!

Focus on getting the support you need at uni and try to worry a bit less. You are only at the start of your adult journey and have got decades of your productive life to come so you have plenty of time. My daughter struggled at school at times and has only recently been diagnosed as dyslexic in her early 20s at uni. We had no idea!

Some people haven't found what the want to do in life till years after uni and achievement, however you define it, can come in different ways and at different times in your life.

I worried the older I got, as I was always anxious of my look. I overcame my anxiety by going sporty activities. My fitness is kept at a high level and prevent aging automatically. And now I have no worries to get older at all.
