gap year jobs that start in sept. suggestions?

i'm guessing at least a few people would've done/will do some work in their gap years this year, presumably ones that start in september

i have no idea how to go about searching for these jobs. it can't be too early to sort out jobs for september now surely, but whenever i look, it's only work that starts in january/april.

if anyone has any idea what to do / how to go about finding these jobs then i would really appreciate it.

thank you

Hi @moovieuvi

Happy New Year!

What a great question! That’s brilliant you are planning ahead.

Do you know what kind of work you would like to pursue during your gap year? Are you planning to do anything like travelling for some of the year?

It really depends on what job you are applying for and who it is with as to their application process. Some employers will be looking to fill roles at short notice, whereas others, especially opportunities such as internships, will give more notice.

It is worth ensuring whatever field you wish to work in, that you are raring to go when a job role comes up.

Firstly, it is worth ensuring your CV is ready to go and that it is kept up-to-date, if you are still studying and have access to career advice then you could run your CV past them and gain interview experience if you think it is useful. If you can’t access this support at college, you could get a local recruitment agency to look at your CV and ask for a practice interview. Recruitment agencies can be great to register with if they offer work in the areas you are interested in because they can notify you of any jobs that you are eligible to apply for, it is in their interest to find you work.

Secondly, are there any particular companies you’d like to work for? If there is, there’s no harm in getting in touch (even if they aren’t currently advertising any vacancies) to express your interest. Therefore, if a job role does come up, they might let you know or remember you when you apply. I was lucky enough to receive one of my job offers after applying to two different roles at the company, the interviewer remembered me and saw how interested I was in the company.

Thirdly, it is worth noting that some employers will need extra workers for the busy Christmas period, but might not take applications until September. For example, in retail or hospitality where employers often hire Christmas temps; this can sometimes lead to a longer-term role.

If you feel you need to increase your work experience for your applications, then could you fit in some related voluntary work, or take a relevant course?

I hope that helps a little, feel free to let me know if you have any questions. Last but not least have a wonderful gap year and good luck with your job hunting!
