Alevel grades

I got my grades back. These are just to give a clue on what to focus on as I did them at the start of year 12. I got a B in English but a U in economics and a D in philosophy. What should I do to improve? Please could you advise me on what to do next? I'm really panicked as I am afraid as how I can move from a U and a D to B, A or A*.

Hello @Susiejones22p

I hope you’re well. I understand receiving these grades can be stressful, especially at the start of Year 12. However, it's important to remain calm and strategic about improvement. First, don't panic - these early assessments are diagnostic tools designed to highlight areas for development, not permanent judgments of your academic potential. Your priority should be to speak directly with each subject teacher to understand the specific reasons behind your current grades. Create a targeted improvement plan that includes regular practice with past papers, developing more effective study techniques like active recall and comprehensive note-taking, and potentially seeking additional support through tutoring or study groups. For economics, focus on understanding core economic theories and practising exam-style questions, while in philosophy, work on developing critical analysis skills and structured essay writing. Develop a consistent study schedule that allocates more time to your weaker subjects. Use online resources, and educational YouTube channels to consolidate your learning. Remember that these grades are just a starting point, not a prediction of your final outcomes, so don't lose hope.

All the best,
Mercy

Hi, I don’t do any of these subjects, but I’ll just give general study advice:

. Use a traffic light system to identify your weaknesses. Highlight your weakest in red and these should be at the top of your list for studying. Of course don’t forget to recap the green ones from time to time, it could be that you recap flashcards for the green topics weekly for example.
. Speak to your teachers! And go to any clinics offered. They are there to help you!
. Reflect on your study method and environment and any changes you can make to them.

And also, don’t worry, these are still early days!

Go and talk to the relevant teachers and ask for their help and advice -this is exactly what they are there for.
