Maths at Strathclyde

A few questions which would really help

- Does anyone have a view on how competitive this is? Appreciate that may vary year on year.

- Are the entry requirements those expected at end of S6? I expect I may need to use S6 (complex reasons why S5 highers won’t be as good as expected)

- Plan to do AH maths and AH mechanics of maths in S6. Does Strathclyde allow a double count for maths at higher and advanced higher?

Hello @LakeD 🙂 Happy to help answer some of your questions!

Generally if an applicant has the profile we're looking for (has achieved the right grades in the right areas) then it's likely we'd be able to consider you for an offer. I can't guarantee this of course as it can vary year to year but if you can give yourself a good grounding in S5 this will serve you well. Which subjects are you taking this year?

The entry requirements can be achieved over two sittings. For Year 1 entry to the BSc Maths programme we're looking for AABB/ABBBC (with Maths A, and Advanced Higher Maths recommended). Try to give yourself as good grounding as you can this year so you can build on your subjects in to S6 if needing to. If you're eligible for a contextual offer you'd be working towards the 'minimum' entry requirements rather than the standard which I've noted.

Yes we'll double count AHs - so if you achieve an A at Higher, and then a B at Advanced Higher we'll consider this as 'AB' in your applicant profile.

Hope this helps! Anything else I can help with let me know. Good luck with your exams!

Hi - doing maths, physics, chemistry and English at highers. Expect A,A,B and maybe B/C in English based on prelims. Next year will do AH maths, mechanics of maths and physics

Hi @LakeD 🙂 Those subjects all sound good for considering Maths degrees! Good luck with your exams this year! We'll be running an advice line on SQA results day this year, so if you wanted to call us once you know your grades we'd be able to give more guidance on what an offer could look like, and what we'd recommend you to prioritise in S6.

Good luck!

One question, where are you doing advanced higher mathematics of mechanics? I also hope to do it but, my school doesn’t offer it. Also, is higher physics a needed requirement to enter the course?

Doing mechanics at school. Don’t think physics is needed for maths.
