Hi anyone who regularly gets a first in assignments share your tips pls

Hi there,

Here are some things I have done to improve my grades to firsts:

Read feedback from previous assignments - reading this is so helpful to understand where your writing currently is, and can help you to identify where you need to improve. Even small things, such as referencing, needing a wider range of academic literature, or structure, can really help to push your grade up.

Talk to your lecturers - especially if you are struggling to make sense of the material, the assignment brief, or the rubric. Don't be afraid to reach out and ask for help, as that is what they are there for!

Give yourself time - this is so important, and something I sometimes fall behind on myself. Starting your assignment a few weeks before the deadline, even if it is just a draft, can be so helpful to make sure you finish in time and to a good standard.

Overall, make use of the resources you are provided with and talk to those who are knowledgeable. Don't be afraid to ask, as that is what they are there for, and I'm sure they are more than happy to help! Practice good time management too, as this gives you the best chance to review and edit your work.

I hope this helps,

I think firstly you need to specify what kind of assignments. Approaches to getting a 1st on a problem set for a maths or engineering studen are probably going to be a bit different for getting a 1st on an essay for a humanities vs social science student, or a lab report for a physics or biology student, etc.

Hmm, in the UK generally I've only ever heard of exams called exams if they're closed book assessments sat in an exam hall at the end of a term!

In any event for essays to get a 1st in my experience it's usually a case of finding a good "hook" into the question. So that way rather than just regurgitating information related to the essay question topic broadly, I'm specifically making a consistent argument throughout. The ones where I just miss a 1st are usually where I don't have as strong a hook into the topic and so tend to meander around a bit more.

For a introductions I usually write them last and use them to outline my overall argument and also defining any relevant approaches or terminology from the question which I'll develop in the essay body.

I mean if you are studying at University level in the UK, there is no extra credit for 80 as opposed to 70
It's unlikely you would consistently score 80s

My 3rd year average was mid-80s and I did philosophy. It is possible and tbh you need not even break your back up from 70s to do it. My current bunch do a quantitative subject and the top 10% routinely hit 80s and 90s. It is nevertheless more unusual in qualitative subjects.

Definitely Possible, but still not likely in a lot of disciplines
But kudos to you and your colleagues though - that's no mean feat!

Hey there 😁

Let me start by saying that while it's not a walk in the park, success is absolutely within reach. Whenever I achieved top marks, it was largely because I stuck closely to the assignment guidelines and marking rubric. Following them can make a world of difference.

In addition to that, thorough research is a game-changer. The deeper you dive into the topic, the more impressive your work will be. It’s about showing that you’ve invested significant effort into understanding the subject.

Don’t underestimate the value of talking with your lecturers either. They can offer invaluable insights into what’s most important and what key points you should focus on.

I hope it will be helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Good luck with your assignments! 🤩
