Help for parent re GCSE maths

Hi my daughter is in year 10 and has obviously chosen her GCSE subjects but she is getting herself in a real state that if she doesn’t pass certain subjects she won’t be able to take the A-levels she wants to do and then go onto uni. She is generally good across most subjects but she does struggle with maths. She has a tutor. She is however in the higher set and is adamant she wants to take that as she needs to get a six or above to get onto the A-levels she wants to study any advice for a worried parent, please.
Have you / has she looked at the entry requirements of her chosen sixth form, and any additional specific requirements for the subjects she wants to take for A Levels?

Usually thar information is available on the sixth form's website.

Example:

My daughter did A Levels in Art, Classical Civilisation, and English.
The sixth form college's general entry requirements were that she needed to have at least 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above included English Language and Maths.
The subject specialist requirements were:
Art - to provide a portfolio of mixed media if you haven't taken Art as a GCSE
English: GCSE grade in English had to be 6 or above
Classical Civilisation: none

Daughter met those requirements and thus got in.

It doesn't sound as though your lass has much to worry about, but do log onto the sixth form's website to check it out for peace of mind.

Hi thanks for replying yes she has and it’s the same requirement at different sixth form colleges too. Its more just managing her expectations if she doesn’t get the grade she wants in maths as that changes her whole set of choices x

Hi apologies only just saw this. Can’t remember off the top of my head - I think psychology - but we’d looked at her School 6th form prospectus and I remember her saying she needs a 6 in maths. I feel I can’t even help her in how she should be revising as I didn’t do alevels etc!

'Getting into a state' suggests that it would be a good idea to include her current school. Sometimes things get said with the best of intentions which land harder than is helpful for particular students.

Hi,
From my experience, for gcse maths, use youtube channels like the GCSE maths tutor as they have some really good explanations. Personally, I havent had a good experience with tutoring and found that it was more effective to use youtube. Specifically, for high grades, try the grade 7+ or grade 9 questions on this. This really helped me throughout gcse. Good luck!
