Honest reviews of Oxford internet Institute

Former students, What was your experience and do you thinking the quality of education / what you got out /work load was worth the price?

I’m looking to do a masters there buts it’s really expensive so what to hear honest reviews of the social science of the internet or social data science course. If you could share what the workload / support was like that would be great too.
Bump
Graduated last year. Not worth it. Expensive, but made no difference to my career. professors were flakey. Friends did similar programmes at Cambridge and UCL and were much happier. One of my biggest regrets
thank you so much for your response. Is there any way I can dm you to ask a few questions?

Wow
What was the workload like and what made the professors flaky? No supoort?
Money grab. Workload is very intense but it felt more like grunt work to check boxes. Didn’t learn much and as a graduate programme doesn’t have a good reputation in the industry. Programme director is a bit of a fame chaser

Thank you.
On workload, How many formative / summative assignments as week and how much support is given please?

Really disappointed it’s a money grab degree. You would think it was Oxford so the quality of education would be decent

Are you referring to Social Data Science Program or Social Science of the Internet? or Both?

if you don’t mind me asking, which similar programmes or departments at Cambridge / UCL?
My prof at UCL told me SDS is a great programme. And another professor, even from a very different field, know that SDS is extremely difficult to get in. I guess don’t expect the education at Oxford to be significantly better. It brings you to a bunch of great people.

Is there any more detail you can provide? I thought SSI was the flag ship course for AI governance etc
Sounds like they oversell the course especially as it’s so selective

Your experiences might be different. However, I have a quantum computing background and have worked in policy for 5 years. I was hoping for it to be significantly more robust. However, if you're transitioning into the field, I believe you'll find it helpful. I thought many of assignments were unnecessary and had words with the programme director about the content. That being said, the network you'll get from the programme is second to none
Current SSI student - I find the programme amazing. Highly interdisciplinary and all lecturers are very respected researchers so you will learn about cutting-edge and world-class research in various fields related to Internet research. Optional papers are also all diverse and interesting. Teaching team is fairly responsive to feedback and committed to creating a good student experience. Agree that it is expensive and I cannot vouch that it will improve employability, but I do know of a few graduates who managed to successfully land jobs in their desired area after the programme - following in the footsteps of OII alumni who have risen the ranks in those companies. I also know of others who did not feel it made a significant difference so it is a bit of luck.

Great! Are you able to comment on the workload at all? Like weekly workload - summative vs formative load etc?
