Future paths into this field - animal psychology

I'm a 1st year psych student, and the main reason I chose to study this is because of my interest in animal psychology. In the future, I know I want to pursue some sort of career in animal research or animal psychology as it's always been something I've been very interested in. but I worry that, because of my previous poor level choices, if that's a realistic goal. During my a levels and school in general, I was never very career motivated, and I didn't make good choices when it came to my future, and because of this, I didn't pick a levels that would help, like a biology a level. I also didn't take the time to think of a more suitable degree to achieve my goal. I've been looking into doing a master's in animal behaviour (I know I have a couple of years, but it's never too early, lmao), and the only two places I can find with courses that will accept a psych degree are Exeter and Manchester Met. Does anyone know if there is anything else I could do to try and help what I want to do, or any other places that might to it, or should I just give up and do something else?

Hi @beefreya!

I think it's great that you're thinking about your long term goals and ways to achieve them!

We can consider applicants with Psychology degrees for MSc Animal Behaviour and Evolution if you cover animal-based modules in your undergrad degree. Getting some voluntary/work experience in animal-based places like vets, zoos, etc. would also strengthen your application and also help you decide whether this is something that you want to do in the long term!

I'd also speak with your uni's careers team as they'll be able to help you out with any opportunities to help you grow in your future career. Not being career motivated when you did your A levels shouldn't stop you from doing what you want to do, as a move from psychology to animal behaviour is a realistic pathway🙂

If you've got any questions, please feel free to give us a shout😀
