Struggling to see what I want to do in the future

Hello

I am a first year biomedical sciences student and I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me advice or ideas on which career path/field to go into after my degree. I originally was on the path of medicine but decided against it as I wasn’t 100% set on it and also to be honest I was fed up with the UCAT.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to share their career path after biomedical sciences (or of a similar degree). I don’t really want to go into research and I am worrying that I am not on the right degree, especially if I want to go out of the science field and maybe go more into business. Is there anyone who has done a biomedical sciences degree and then gone into something every different - if so did you feel the biomedical degree helped you? Or if you stayed in science what are you doing now?

Any advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks so much.

Hi there! I understand the difficulty. I've been down a few different routes. Research is a very broad term so if you could specify that might help. I studied pharmacology and am going to do a PhD next year but before that I've considered or done:

Teaching

Consulting

Clinical data management

Medical writing

Creative writing

Social Media Management

You can go on to do business, but probably focused within the pharmaceutical/biomedical field, as this would be where you seem most knowledgeable. If so, you should do an MBA after your BSc, this was what my lecturer did before working in pharmaceutical companies and then returning to academia.
If that appeals to you, make sure that your extra curriculars align with this. Try to get internships in the business side of things.

I hope this helps!

Hello,

Thank you very much for this information. It is really helpful. In regards to the type of research, I am just not 100% keen on being in a lab for a lot of time if you get where I am coming from? Biotechnology interests me but I feel I may be more suited to dealing with people face to face. I am unsure and going to continue to look around.

Thanks so much and I hope your PhD starts off well next year!
