not wanting to do a year abroad

Hi all, I'm in a difficult position, I received an email to tell me that I've been offered my year abroad at my chosen university (I applied when I wanted to do it but now I'm unsure)

If I accepted the place but then decided to drop out of it would I receive some sort of penalisation? Like a fine or a warning that I won't complete my degree? This may sound so silly but I'm genuielly paranoid that this may be the case.

My degree has "with year abroad" with it and my tutor said if I decided I didn't want to do the year abroad that I could obviously drop out but "it would be a hassle for many people" (very evasive wording)

Has anyone dropped out of it or gone abroad and decided to come home? I would love to hear your experiences and advice

Hello Ayaaaaaaaaaxoxx,

Firstly, what course is this for? Is it for medicine (as I can see that this thread is currently sitting in the medical schools forum)?

Whether you'd be penalised or not for doing the year abroad will depend on your course and university. I know that for me, I accepted my offer (Languages with a placement year abroad) however, there was the option for me and others to not do the year abroad and move straight to final year without being significantly penalised.

I would recommend asking the person who runs your course to see if it's possible for you to change plans and to not have to do the year abroad.

That being said, I'm currently on my placement year and I would strongly recommend it.

Best wishes,
Imane
