How does roehampton uni calculate degree classifications?

Hi bit worried as im a second year and just had my worst grade yet a 55 😭 in first years i didnt get lower than a 65 and most of my assessments were in the 70s and obviously it was level 4 so it was easier but im worried this one grade will negatively impact me since im trying to get a first😭 the other 2 essays ive had back this year are okay, a 75 and a 68😭 i know i will pass but i want to pass well and im going to take the criticism on board and better it in the future but im jist so upset that my essay fell that low and im worried it will stain my record and make me ineligible for a first seeing as second and third year only count nkt first year (which makes sense because first year is an easier level😭) i might also just be upset because i thought id done relatively well 😭 ive always had average grades not horrible or bad but not straight 9s and A*s but i just really want uni to be the thing i can say i got a first in😭😭😭😭

I've tried to read the above several times, but have failed. Is that really all one long sentence? Did you try reading it back after you'd typed it to check that it made sense and was coherent? Anyway...

See Roehampton's Taught Degree Regulations 2024/25. Paragraph 25, Award and classification of Bachelor’s Degrees, contains the information you seek:
"(e) Save for the provisions of (f), (g), (h) (i) and (k), Bachelor’s Degrees are classified on the basis of the average of the percentage marks in the best 100 credits at Level 6 and the next best 100 credits at Levels 5–6 which the student has achieved at the University (i.e. not through credit transfer), irrespective of subject and with no weighting between levels, rounded to the nearest whole number."

Between Levels 5 and 6, you'll have done 240 credits. So the worst 40 credits (up to 20 of which can be from Level 6) are completely ignored when calculating you degree classification. How large is the unit you just got a 55 in? I suspect it was less than 40 credits.

You're welcome.

Also, it only occurred to me after I'd sent my original reply that perhaps you use an emoji as a full stop. Your latest reply confirms that. Your original post is a lot easier to read now that I understand that!

Hi @strategytwice

In short, the standard way for the university to calculate degree classifications is to take a weighted average of the best 100 credits at Level 6 (Year 3), plus the next best 100 credits from the remaining 20 credits at Level 6 and the 120 credits at Level 5 (Year 2). As a result then degree classifications are based on 200 credits, and the remaining 40 credits from Level 5/6 do not count to the degree (with a maximum of 20 credits from Level 6 not counting).

You can find all the information here.
