What do you wish you knew before starting university?

That the course I did would be irrelevant to the world and of no real use in terms of getting a job (joint degree in journalism and social sciences). And equally important: I wish I had known that most people don’t know what theyreally enjoy doung until they are at least 30 years old. Those people should not bother doing a degree until that age unless they are absolutely certain about what they love to do each and every day. My son is different from me and at the age of 22 is now doing a PhD in Physics because from the age of 12 he loved physics and still loves it. Good luck with your future! That university is so much more than just getting a degree. Learning to live alone, plan your days, manage money and making friends from all around the world is so so valuable

Hi there!

I wish that I had know a bit more about my degree before starting. I didn't read any of the curriculum before I started and I got lucky that it fit with what interested me but I think that going to my first few lectures would have been less scary if I had an idea of what I was going to be doing about. So definitely have a look into the curriculum for your course!

What do you wish you knew before starting university?

Hi there,

Great question!

This is something I have come to learn, but I wish I knew that it is okay to not be on the same path as others. I know so many people who are set in what they want to do in the future and have very high ambitions, so as someone who has no idea, this made me very anxious. But it's okay! I'm still figuring things out, but that is totally normal and so many others are in the same boat too.

I also wish I knew the importance of creating habits. I'm in my final year, and still struggling with this a lot! This can be with assignments, with exercise, with food, or with your free time, but getting into a good routine and creating healthy habits can go a long way and be reflected well in your grades.

What do you wish you knew before starting university?

Hi there,

This is a very interesting questions! 🙂 For me, university was more than just a qualification or a degree, it taught me so much about living alone and how to navigate life. It also improved my organisation and planning skills such as budgeting, which after graduating are very important skills to have...

One thing I wish I knew sooner into my studies, is the variety of support you can get from my university which was the University of Central Lancashire. There are so many support options from careers teams checking your cv to financial support and how to budget. All those are in place for students so make sure you make the most of them.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any further questions 🙂

That there are so many more opportunities at university than just getting your degree. You can study abroad, go on placements for various jobs you are interested in, and join global opportunities programmes that could take you anywhere in the world! You learn to take care of yourself practically and mentally, can join societies, and much more!

What do you wish you knew before starting university?
Hi!

This is a great idea so I thought I could add some of my advice on here with things that I wish I knew before starting University.

1.

Set a budget! Budgeting is important and it is a good idea to try and set one before you start Uni so that you don't end up spending all of your money in freshers week! See how much loan you will be getting (and money from a job if you have one) and work out how much you will have left to spend each week/month.

1.

Join some group chats before you start as you will sometimes meet some people here before you start and this can be a good way to start to meet some people. It can be less daunting talking to some people online so it might be a good idea to try this.

1.

When you are packing, try and sort your things into different bags for each room - have a bag for the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom etc as this will be so much easier to unpack when you get to Uni.

1.

Be ready to put yourself out there! I think I thought that I would just find friends straight away, but you do have to be prepared to just go up to people and make friends.

1.

You may be bored at some times, so try and think of something that you like doing on your own. Whether this is a book, craft or going to the gym or for a walk, it's nice to have something that you like doing.

I hope some of this helps!
