First week of apprenticeship and I’m regretting it.

I started an apprenticeship on Monday, but it doesn’t feel right for me. I’m really struggling to understand the software, even after spending my free time trying to teach myself, and my colleagues explain things like I should already know them, even though I made it clear in my interview that I had no experience. The other apprentices seem to know what they’re doing and aren’t very approachable, and honestly, I’m finding the work boring, which makes it even harder to stay motivated. Being the only female on the team doesn’t help either. I feel ungrateful for wanting to leave such a rare opportunity, but I’m not sure staying will make things any better.

Oh my I’m sorry you’re going through that + being the only female there girl. Personally i guess have the courage to rock up to the manager or ur mentor and tell them that given your no experience in tech you wouldn’t quite understand some things and that you require some support with the gaps in ur learning+ It’s always good to keep open communication w ur mentor. Honestly stay confident with yourself and don’t feel pressured or discouraged you will get there eventually you just started - always advocate for yourself because no one will do so!!!

Even if I’m finding the work boring? I don’t want to wait hoping it’ll get better if there’s something better out there for me

In most cases it does get better and you get used to it, if you don’t understand the work reasonable way is to ask for help so if you don’t understand in general you can’t rlly say that it is boring nd if your not keen on waiting any longer branch out to ppl in places like LinkedIn and get to know their roles before applying

Stick it out for a bit, if you still don’t like it after 3-6 months, you’ll probably hate it in 6-12 months. Keep applying for new roles during your first few months just in case.

Honestly it’s just your first week there, and yes the learning curve is very steep at first. You feel infinitely behind and it may seem like it’ll take so much work to get to the same place as ur colleagues and other apprentices. But I promise you, the other apprentices are also struggling, they just hide it better. Also being the only woman is hard but sadly that’s the case in most places for tech. If you think it’s tech that’s the issue and you have no passion for it then yes I’d say apply elsewhere in the meantime, otherwise I honestly think you should stick it out. The first week is too early to get a good idea of how it’ll be on the job.

And it’s likely the work is boring because you’re not understanding it. Once it clicks it’ll start being fun again I promise. I know it’s really demotivating when you’re struggling and it seems like ur the only one having a hard time but I promise it will get better!! Give the apprenticeship more of a chance before you write it off completely!!

I realise this post was made a month ago, so I hope things have gotten better since then!
