MATHS - access to he engineering

Hiya, I have been given an unconditional offer to study an access to HE in engineering at newham college in september. Can anyone tell me how, as a general rule, these access courses teach mathematics modules? How do they teach the mathematics modules and how do they assess your mathematics skills to determine your grades in each module.

I have to get 15 distinctions total in the maths modules. I am scared that any slip up will result in me getting a merit. I have been self studying using the a level edexcel textbook for maths, TLmaths, and Bicen maths videos.

hey! I also received an unconditional offer for September. I started self-studying maths 8 months ago with a mix of youtube videos and old exam papers. what's the exact name of the book that you're using?

haha no way. I've also been self studying. Nearly finished with the as content (self studying is hard... No guidance... Catching yourself slacking... Etc). I've been using a pdf of the Edexcel as level maths textbook. Are you going to Newham college aswell?

how long have you been studying for? i've been self-studying since july and i finished linear algebra, calc I and II and recently finished statistics and probability. im doing logs and exponentials right now, im aiming to finish all the topics by august. i do 1-2 hours a day tho which is the reason why i'm going slow, i dont like cramming. and yes i will be going newham college in sept haha :')

That's interesting, are you following an American curriculum? Calc I and II is what their calculus course is called in the states. Did you cover all of a level algebra content e.g. straight line graphs, inequalities, circles, etc

for calculus i watched the organic chemistry tutor which follows an american curriculum but he covered all the topics that are in a levels, like integration by parts, u sub and trig sub, arc length, surface area of revolution etc. i looked into the content of a level calculus and watched them on youtube. the only thing that may differ are the exam style questions. i havent started algebra yet but i'm planning on doing that after logs and exponentials which is v short. do you know if there will be proofs? it mentions sets and logic but idk if proofs come under that?

I replied to this... I don't know where the reply has gone lol. I'll say it again though.
I'd guess that there's not much if any coverage of proofs as I reckon the mathematics will be more applied due to it's relation to engineering. Not sure though. I tried asking at the open day what the maths is like and they gave quite a crap answer

access to HE usually do assignments rather than tests, and you can usually get an overall distinction in the unit even with a few mistakes, not newham college but im almost finished with my access course in UCEN college and it was calm

hi, how are you? I was meant to start access to he: engineering science with mathematics at Newham this year, however, it got delayed due to me travelling. I was wondering how you're finding it at the moment? what are the class sizes like? are your teachers friendly and engaging? what's the girl to boy ratio like? and finally, what are the age ranges of the class? id love to have an insight on what it is like before reapplying for next year admission. thanks, Addison.

@jessepinkman123

A college will design a program under a title such as Access to HE Engineering and then it would need to be approved by an Awarding Body such as AQA in the North West. Not all Access programs are the same, the one that I am familiar with is 15 credits Electrical Engineering, 15 credits Mechanical Engineering, and 15 credits Maths - essentially 5 assignments for each 'module' (subject). There are usually 15 ungraded units which cover study skills etc as well such as essay writing, presentations, report writing etc too

Their website will likely have a breakdown of the modules on it
