Fine art Interview

Hi, I have an interview with Falmouth university end of the month and I need to make an in person portfolio but am not sure how many things i can take with me - was wondering if anyone who's had an interview could say how long they had and how big their portfolio was? Any insight on the questions they might ask is also welcome x

Hi @Ginger06

Congrats on getting an interview!

Although I study fashion design, I also had to do an interview with my portfolio for another uni when applying so I thought I'd share some tips from my experience.

I remember wanting to take lots of work as I wanted to have lots to show in my interview. This worked mostly in my favor as we had lots to chat about. However, I didn't actually get to show everything in my interview as I had so much. With that in mind, I'd suggest keeping your portfolio concise, with your key pieces/your favorites included. You want to be able to talk naturally and enthusiastically about your work, so make sure you include what interest you the most. I always liked to add in some 'working'/sketchbook style pages too so I could show my working process.

You might want to check with Falmouth if there are any specific requirements they are wanting, like a certain number of pages or pieces, or specific styles of work. They most likely would have let you know this information when you were invited to interview if they wanted to see specific things. But you could always get in touch with them if you want further confirmation.

I also found my work was a little too big! My portfolio included A2 pieces of work which were a little bit big for the table we were having the interview on - which some may argue was not my fault! 😅 But my main take way with this is to make sure your work is as easy to present and follow as possible, whether you're showing it digitally, or physically. If you do have some larger pieces of work, they should still be okay to include too.

In terms of questions I was asked, my interview felt quite informal. I was asked about my work and processes, and how I have created some of my pieces. They asked me why I wanted to study at said university and what I wanted to get out of the course. And then the rest was more chatty about designers I liked, my favorite pieces of work, etc. I would suggest you also make sure you're familiar with your personal statement in case you're asked about anything you mentioned in that.

I hope this helps and good luck at the interview! 🙂

Didn’t they tell you this?

Falmouth are desperate so you will get an offer just for turning up. It’s not a real interview they use it to sell the course and university to you
