Need help - Dropped out and they're trying to charge me extra

Hi, so I recently dropped out of University of Birmingham (as I just didn't like it) and I'm reapply to other unis to start in September. I researched thoroughly beforehand and emailed my head tutor about it, and one thing he mentioned is that I would be liable for only 25% of tuition fees as I had only attended semester one and my last confirmed date of engagement was in semester one. I checked to make sure this was true on uob's website too!

However, I woke up this morning to see a billing invoice, asking me to pay £6937.50 by January 25th???? Idk if it's just me but that doesn't seem like 25% and regardless, wouldn't I have to pay back the 25% back to sfe when I earn above a certain threshold because that is what I researched online? I wouldn't mind as much having to pay 25% back because that's a lot more feasible than £6937.50 and I do not have that type of money rn...

Anyways, someone please give me advice or your experiences because this feels so weird of the university.

When did you formally withdraw from Birmingham? Has the uni confirmed you withdrawal in writing?

Did you apply for funding from SFE in the first instance, and did you have funding confirmed and disbursed? Did you check on the SFE payments page to see if the payments did in fact go through to the university if you had funding confirmed?

Also, did you inform SFE when you withdrew from the university?

Note that regardless of whether or not you are only liable for 25% of the tuition fees it's important to bear in mind for SFE entitlement purposes, that will count as one full year of your student finance entitlement.

edit: also is this undergraduate or postgraduate study (and funding)?

Interestingly, that's 75%, which according to the page below isn't a listed fee liability. Are you sure you read the invoice correctly?

13/12/2024! Reconfirmed it with my former head tutor after seeing that abysmal invoice... and yes I received a formal withdrawal email saying I'm liable for £2312.50 so honestly, I think there might've just been an error on the university's side.

Yes I applied for SFE and checked to see the payment for semester one went through! I've called them up before dropping out and yes I'm aware it counts as a full year of entitlement. I calculated afterwards and it seems the uni is trying to charge me for semesters two and three for some odd reason.

Also, this is for undergraduate study and funding!!

Yeah that's exactly why I'm confused because if anything, it seems they're trying to charge me for semesters two and three? And yes, I'm sure I read that invoice correctly after looking at it so many times 😭😭😭

Ok in that case, as above technically speaking, it doesn't really matter how much they charged for tuition fees to SFE, and they shouldn't charging you for any. So you just need to contact them and explain that you were a UK/home fees student funded by SFE and you withdrew before the end of the course while only liable for 25% of the tuition fees as per their policies (include a copy of the email with your head of department and link to their webpage where it says that, and send proof of the date you withdrew and got confirmation of withdrawing). Then they should hopefully sort it out.

Definitely do that sooner than later though to make sure they don't try and claim you're a non-paying debtor!

SFE pays the university in 3 instalments, £2,312.50 in Oct, £2,312.50 in Feb and £4,625.00 in May

SO it looks like they have billed you either the 1st or 2nd instalment + the 3rd to get to £6937.50

I would just send some emails ASAP, its not uncommon that universities accidentally bill too much... I had a friend who got billed there on-stie university accommodation with an additional 0 on the end 💀

I'll definitely do that as soon as possible, thank you so much for the advice! Really thought I missed something here

I sent them emails so quickly after receiving the invoice but I think I'll call them up to get it sorted ASAP too 🙏

And wow adding an extra zero is insane work 💀💀

Hi, I was doing physics!! Dropped out because I actually live at home and just wanted to move out tbh. The course and department were great but I just couldn't get myself to like the uni itself even after giving it so much time. If you're sure you like uob and have visited the uni before too, then don't worry too much

Try not to be paranoid also because in my situation, turns out I don't have to pay them anything and it's actually something to do with sfe? I don't really get what they said but they are decent at sorting issues out at least 🙏
