Will part time NHS bank shift work affect maintenance loans allowance?

My wife (aged 25) is studying a full time NHS midwifery course and hopes to take on some extra paid work since all of her current allowance goes into childcare. She gets the maximum allowance currently, I (husband) earn £28,000 now and we have two kids 1 & 2.5y old in full time childcare.

We’re hoping she can annually do anywhere from £3000 to £7000 of bank shifts work depending on availability and intensity of her course throughout the year. I’ve heard in some places that bank shift work for the NHS doesn’t affect maintenance loans the way other work would.

I’ve also noticed that on the govt calculator, adding an extra £10,000 to the household income only has a small impact on the overall allowance. I’d love to know where we can get solid numbers on something like this before committing.

We’re also keen to know if it’ll affect the NHS learning support fund.

Thanks for any help!

Hi there,

The NHS learning support fund is a different source of funding to SFE funding. So I would advise checking with them directly. If your wife is the student then her income doesn't affect the amount we award her as we assess this based on your earnings. Thanks, Jason

Your wife's income will not affect the NHS LSF training grant payments as they are not based on income (you just need to show that you are eligible for student finance).

Hi CBailey199701,

As advised, the students earned income isn't taken into account for SFE support. I have provided a link where you can locate contact details for NHS support.

Thanks, Clare
