Revsion help- maths, English lit and bio?

Hey I was wondering if anyone had any tips for maths, English lit and bio? I’m in year 11 and doing my mocks atm which kind of made me realise some areas I need to work on.

In maths, I’m predicted an 8 (which I would like to get up to a 9) and I make loads of silly mistakes in tests which I think brings me down. So I was wondering if anyone had any advice for this?

In English lit, im predicted a 7 (and I want to take this for A-level asw so I want to get this up to a 9). I struggle to structure my essays, following the what, how why structure (cuz I don’t really get the why part) and often get marked down on my intro, conclusion and lack of context. So I was wondering if anyone had any basic templates for this or general advice? (I do pride and prejudice, an inspector calls and much ado about nothing btw)

Biology is my worst subject by far. I’m predicted a 7 but that feels really out of reach atm. So I was wondering if anyone had any tips for application questions and revision techniques (outside of doing past papers).

Thank you :smile:)

Hi
For maths it seems like you know what you need to do. Just do loads of past papers and CHECK your answers.
For English lit the best way to revise is to;
Make flash cards of quotes and analyse them. Also do lots of practice essays - the more you do, the better you become and the quicker you develop ideas - make sure you understand the Assessment Objectives as well.
For biology - practice questions especially 6 markers and (most importantly) revise the mark scheme. So when you mark your questions, make a note of the answers which the mark scheme is looking for - the same question or a similar one is likely to come up on a test.

Hey!
For Maths, I would recommend using sites like Maths Genie to do lots of practice questions. That way, you start to get used to the questions they ask and will spot where you miss little details and lose marks. I’m predicted an A* at A-level (I’m y13), and this is how I make sure I don’t make silly mistakes.

For Eng Lit, I did AQA and got 150/160 overall, with 28/30 on Much Ado. For Eng Lit, focus on remembering a few quotes for each theme, and each character. These can overlap, and should only be a few words long - no point remembering long sentences. From sitting the exam myself, and tutoring Y11s, I know that structure is possibly the most important part of an answer. I teach them structures that can be adapted to any question, but I do recommended FirstRateTutors and Mr Salles for help with that.

For Biology, I did Edexcel iGCSE and got 93%, and am currently predicted A* at A-level. Although past papers are really important, they’re not effective if you haven’t familiarised yourself with the spec. I’d recommend ClareBiology, BioRach, and Miss Estruch videos. Go through them with the specification, and make notes/flashcards, ticking off spec points as you go. I also offer Biology tutoring, and see a common theme with people missing the key words in their answers. Ultimately, Biology Mark Schemes are looking for their key words and their key marking points, so you need to familiarise yourself with the specification to make sure you are hitting them every time.

If you’re interested in tuition, even just for a few sessions, then let me know!

Good luck!
