Biomedcial sceince and biology

I would like to apply to biomedcial sceince but some the unis I want to apply to have only biological sceince, so I am asking that a personal statment mainly focusing on biomedical science be accepted by unis offering biological science

Hi Hahahahyah99,

I hope you're doing well.

I studied Biological Sciences at Oxford Brookes University, and for my personal statement, I tailored it specifically to Biological Sciences by avoiding any mention of medicine or human-specific studies. Instead, I focused on areas like plant science, biotechnology, and laboratory techniques. It’s possible to write a personal statement that works for both Biomedical Science and Biological Sciences courses. To do this effectively, I recommend:

1.

Focus on Overlapping Themes: Look at the modules or subjects offered by both degrees and highlight shared topics. Examples could be modules/classes in genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, and lab skills. While Biomedical Science often leans towards human biology, nutrition, and medicine, Biological Sciences may include areas like ecology, plant sciences, and conservation. However, both degrees are in life sciences, so there are always commonalities.

2.

Understand Course Differences: Biomedical Science degrees are often more specialised and may lead to careers in clinical or medical fields. If you're applying to Biomedical Science courses, I suggest prioritising those that are IBMS-accredited (Institute of Biomedical Science). These courses meet specific professional standards and can open doors to becoming a biomedical scientist. You can check the IBMS website for more information: IBMS Accredited Degrees.

3.

Consider Biological Sciences with a Human Focus: Some universities offer Biological Sciences courses with a specialisation, such as Human Biosciences. These programmes often overlap with Biomedical Science, which could make your personal statement feel more aligned with both degrees. Oxford Brookes has a Human Bioscience course that can be viewed here: https://www.brookes.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/biological-sciences-human-biosciences. Although Biological Sciences (Human Biosciences) degrees exist, not every university adds the specialisation to the degree title and there is a lot of variation between Biological Sciences courses. Due to this, it is important to look at the modules/classes.

A Biomedical Science-focused statement is how I would approach this scenario, but it carries some risk when applying to pure Biological Sciences programmes. To minimise this risk, emphasise shared skills and themes in your statement and consider applying for Human Bioscience degrees if they are offered at the universities you're interested in studying at.

Good luck with your application! If you have more questions, feel free to ask.

Good afternoon,

When you wish to apply for two different subjects, it's a good idea to have a broader personal statement and not refine your statement to either of the courses. Instead, you could use more broad terms and write about your experiences. Both of these degrees are within the biological science department, so you could write about being a part of the biological science school/ department.

At the University of Reading, both Biomedical Sciences undergraduate courses and BSc Biological Sciences courses are offered.

The University of Reading looks at every application on individual merit, ensuring every student can receive an offer; this is the contextual offers scheme. However, this does not mean every student gets a university offer.

When I was applying to the university, I found it very helpful to attend an Open Day; however, for students who live far away or do not have access to an Open Day, there is a Virtual Tour which prospective students can look at from their homes. I highly recommend you have a look at the Virtual Tour, it provides an insight tot the campus.

I hope this helps answer your question, and I wish you luck with your personal statement.

All the best,
Ella

Hi @Hahahahyah99

Lancaster Uni offers both biomedical science/biomedicine and biological science. Both degrees will have a fair bit in common so you can focus your personal statement on things like lab techniques or scientific processes that interest you.

Hope that helps,

Hi Hahahahyah99,

I found a few universities that offer Biomedical Science but struggled to find "Biomedical Science & Biology" specifically. Here are the links:

My university (the University of Bradford) offer this course too:

I found one that may be to your liking:

Hope this helps!
