1.
Focus on Overlapping Themes: Look at the modules or subjects offered by both degrees and highlight shared topics. Examples could be modules/classes in genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, and lab skills. While Biomedical Science often leans towards human biology, nutrition, and medicine, Biological Sciences may include areas like ecology, plant sciences, and conservation. However, both degrees are in life sciences, so there are always commonalities.
2.
Understand Course Differences: Biomedical Science degrees are often more specialised and may lead to careers in clinical or medical fields. If you're applying to Biomedical Science courses, I suggest prioritising those that are IBMS-accredited (Institute of Biomedical Science). These courses meet specific professional standards and can open doors to becoming a biomedical scientist. You can check the IBMS website for more information: IBMS Accredited Degrees.
3.
Consider Biological Sciences with a Human Focus: Some universities offer Biological Sciences courses with a specialisation, such as Human Biosciences. These programmes often overlap with Biomedical Science, which could make your personal statement feel more aligned with both degrees. Oxford Brookes has a Human Bioscience course that can be viewed here: https://www.brookes.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/biological-sciences-human-biosciences. Although Biological Sciences (Human Biosciences) degrees exist, not every university adds the specialisation to the degree title and there is a lot of variation between Biological Sciences courses. Due to this, it is important to look at the modules/classes.
