Thinking about Psychology at DMU? Let me tell you what it's like

Hey there 😁

My name is Julia and I'm a third-year Psychology student. Just like many of you, I was in your shoes four years ago, trying to figure out the right course and university. Thankfully, I made a choice that’s been awesome for me. Now, I’m on the verge of graduating with a degree in Psychology, a standout CV, a treasure trove of unforgettable memories, and a clear career path ahead. Let me share my journey at DMU with you. If you’ve got any questions, feel free to drop them below 🥰

Choosing a city to study in was as important as selecting the right course. Leicester stood out to me because it’s known for being one of the most affordable cities for students, which was a significant factor given my financial considerations. Beyond affordability (student accommodation starting around £80/90 per week), Leicester is vibrant and full of students, offering countless entertainment options to make the most of student life.

Plus, the affordability has allowed me to save lots of money and pursue my passion for travelling. Every couple of months, I explored a new destination 🌟

In Poland, my daily school commute took over an hour, which I despised. At DMU, I wanted a different experience. Thankfully, the campus's central location means everything I need is just a short walk away. With numerous student accommodations within minutes of campus, I’ve enjoyed the luxury of a three-minute walk to my classes. It’s a simple pleasure, but it’s made a huge difference in my daily life 😅

Transitioning to university life is a big step, especially as an international student. Fortunately, DMU offers extensive support through financial aid, mental health services, academic guidance, and more. Each student is also assigned a personal tutor, ensuring you’re never alone in your journey. This support network has been a cornerstone of my success, helping me balance academic and personal development seamlessly.

Studying Psychology at DMU has been incredibly rewarding, not just for the knowledge I’ve gained but for the transferable skills I’ve developed - critical thinking, problem-solving, data analysis, and more. Whether you choose to become a psychologist or explore roles in business, education, or social work, the options are limitless. This versatility was a major draw for me when choosing my course, and it continues to be a source of reassurance as I plan my future 🌈

One of the most exciting aspects of my final year is the opportunity to conduct my own research project. The dissertation process is well-supported, with resources and supervision to help bring your ideas to life. I can’t wait to see the results of my own research!

Some say a Psychology degree is demanding, and while that’s true, it can also be easily manageable. I’ve balanced my studies with part-time work, travel, and social activities, all thanks to effective time management. My trusty calendar has been my best friend, helping me make the most of every moment 😎

DMU encourages students to pursue their aspirations as well as passions, and I’ve taken full advantage of this. Over the past two years, I’ve participated in a variety of extracurricular activities: a Spanish language course, a TEFL certification, academic trips to Bilbao and Alicante, a remote internship in Global Psychology with Think Pacific, and my personal favourite - a year-long student exchange in Spain 🔥

One of the standout aspects of my time at DMU has been the incredible careers support. Through the DMU Frontrunners programme, I landed a paid internship as a Research Assistant in the Psychology of Language, gaining invaluable practical experience. Opportunities like these are plentiful at DMU (summer and graduate internships), and the on-site careers hub provides guidance every step of the way - from CV checks to mock interviews.

Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but as I near the finish line, I can confidently say that choosing DMU was the right choice for me. Reflecting on my journey, I realise how much I’ve grown, both academically and personally, thanks to the incredible opportunities. These experiences have truly shaped my path, and I’m endlessly grateful for the doors they’ve opened. The academic excellence and personal development DMU fosters deserve all the recognition 🎉

If you're about to become a DMU student, put your hands up! I will be more than happy to share all the amazing things I got involved in and instruct you how you can be a part of them too.

I hope it was helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Take care,
