Getting a laptop from DSA

Hi there,

I'm currently applying to study Computer Science in September 2025 and was wondering what the process of applying for DSA was like for the current year? I have Dyspraxia so I should almost certainly be entitled to a laptop as its basically one of the only learning adjustments I've had throughout school.

As I'm studying Computer Science would I be entitled to a higher spec laptop through DSA or would it be not allowed because that's course related?
I've also read that DSA might only provide you with a laptop if you can "prove" that your current one doesn't work for you / you haven't got one, can anyone confirm this?

Thanks 😊

Hi @imdylan

I am a masters student with a cognitive disability but have had the DSA in place for my undergraduate too, when I applied for DSA they gave me a laptop as well as some other bits to help. They have a standard laptop and then if you want one with better specs you put more money towards it if that makes sense. They never asked about my current laptop as the new one has all the assistive technology on it so I think for you, doing a computer science course if you can maybe go for a slightly better spec laptop (but i would talk to them about it in the needs assessment and see what they say).
The process for getting a DSA isn't too bad if you have a formal diagnosis that's what you need if not you will need to get one through a formal facility, you fill a form and then will be contacted for a needs assessment where they work out exactly what you need personal to you, which is really nice. It can take a while to go through so I would recommend applying as soon after results day as possible just to get ahead of it.
Once its in place you can contact your university and inform them so they can also put the correct needs in place such as exam accommodations and one to one support.

This is my experience with DSA I hope its helpful.

That’s super helpful and cleared a lot up. Thanks so much. In regards to the standard laptop, do you know how much this roughly cost / the amount assigned to this? If I was to upgrade to let’s say, a MacBook, do you know how much this would cost?
