What is Cambridge’s VetCam programme like?

Hiya, just wondering if anyone had experience with VetCam, the 3 day programme at Cambridge for potential vet applicants. I haven’t visited Cambridge before but really want to know more about their Vet School and what a student’s day to day life actually looks like there because I’ve heard a lot about it!! Has anyone here done it or something similar in the past? On top of that, will anyone else here be going this year? I’d love to find other people interested in vetmed

I went and I absolutely loved it!!! Learned lots and it actually put me quite at ease with the application process, got to see lots of different colleges and I was also lucky enough to spend a day at a different college with their admissions tutor for winning their essay competition! Let me know if you have any specific questions about the experience

Thank you for your reply and that's wonderful to hear!! I'd really like to know what kind of things you spent most of your time doing: is it a lot of lectures/presentations, more practical work, being shown around like you mentioned for colleges, or just a combination of everything? Also, were there opportunities to work in groups and talk to other people on the programme? And as a final thing, I'm not sure what the situation is with transport there - do you remember if Cambridge handles like, moving people from place to place or is that something you were expected to organise? Thank you so much again!!

Apologies if this sounds silly but i’m a bit new to TSR haha, is there any way to send pictures via private messaging? As the easiest way to show you the activities is by sending you the screenshots of the timetable! In terms of transport you are expected to arrange that yourself, I was dropped off and then went home via train, however I think if you are in care or maybe some other circumstances you can apply for the travel bursary which will pay for your transport. Obviously whilst there you either walk between colleges or at one point we did get on a bus to go to the vet school itself. There was lots of time with other people, we played board games the first night to get to know eachother, then obviously meal times and everything is done in groups, I made some good friends (although since it’s been almost a year we stopped contacting eachother as is always the way).

As you can see there’s a real range of activities, during the tour of the veterinary school we got to see the clinical skills lab and had a go at the intubation model which was cool! We also went to see the teaching horses and cows, and had a go at hearing a cows heartbeat through a stethoscope, as well as drawing a blood sample from a fake horse. There was also a demonstration of a clinic appointment with a dog with an ear infection to see the methods of examination

Hello, that’s perfect thank you so so much again! The timetable looks really interesting, you’re right there really is a range of things - I didn’t expect areas like neuroscience and pharmacology to make an appearance! I’m going to book a place later today, I think you’ve convinced me haha

Oh that’s great to hear she benefited from it, thank you - maybe I’ll see her there then!!

I went in 2024 before 2025 and it was a really good experience! I didn't end up applying there as I preferred certain aspects of other vet schools, but it allowed me to get a feel for what sort of experience the vet med course provides you with and I met lots of other applicants, a couple of whom I am still in touch with which is really lovely. As you stay overnight there you get to experience the accommodation, and they show you around several different colleges (i think 4-6, can't quite remember). One of the most interesting parts was the taster lectures in the respective buildings for that subject (so you experience the topic as well as seeing the teaching facilities). We had taster lectures on things like anatomy, pharmacology, zoology, physiology etc, and I mentioned this in my personal statement (have currently received 2 offers and am waiting to complete 1 more interview + hear back from one post interview). Definitely would recommend!

Hi!! I did not go to Vet Cam but I did get a place at the Sutton Trust Summer school! It was the best week! I’d definitely recommend applying for it as it’s completely free and you meet some great people! It really gave me an insight into student life and Cambridge and helped me put the course into a realistic perspective! I would recommend having a look at it!

Hi I also went last March and would really recommend it!

Hiya vet cam was a very inspiring visit to Cambridge taught you about the course and also the colleges to apply for.
Certainly gave me a feel for the place and I included in my application this year

Reply 14

Certainly students should do their research on the issues with the Cambridge course - that would not be best achieved by reading that very poor piece of journalism in the Guardian
