Is a gap year a good option for Vet Med. I would love to take a year getting more work experience and was wondering wether this could be an option.
I personally am not taking any gap years but a lot of people that I've met on open days and in my work experience placements have, and it's a great opportunity to get to know more about the field and gain the required work experience hours for some of the universities. It is definitely a great option and I would've done it too if not for personal circumstances that prevented me. As long as you make good use of your time off and are able to justify it to the universities you apply to it should be completely fine.

I am currently applying for vet med without a gap year but most of the applicants I know have done/are doing a gap year, so its a great option and definitely not uncommon with a degree like vet med. However, I would still recommend you apply before your gap year anyway, its a very difficult course to get into and getting the experience of doing interviews and pre-interview assessments would be really beneficial. You can apply for deferred entry if you're still set on taking a gap year and if you end up having to reapply, you will do a gap year and have the experience to do even better on your next application. Do keep in mind that if you apply for deferred entry you will still need to meet the minimum work experience requirements before applying, so if you feel that you need the gap year to get the minimum work experience then you might have to wait and apply during your gap year, although the work experience requirements have been reduced quite significantly in the past few years so it shouldn't be too difficult to get during school.
Whatever you end up doing, don't be afraid of taking a gap year, there are plenty of gap year and mature students studying vet med degrees and its definitely an option you can take if you think it would be what's best for you! Best of luck with your vet application journey! 🍀

I'm kind of forced to take a gap year but because I've been rejected from my interview so have no offers. I feel its better to gain mote work experience and apply with a stronger application and be more prepared for my interviews
A gap year can be very valuable - if you don't have a driving licence then this would be an excellent use of the time. Additional work experience, and applying with grades in hand if you don't have a deferred offer, will also be beneficial.

I am currently having a gap year before going to university next year. I didn't apply for university last year so this is my first application round. I am so glad that I made the decision because I think firstly, veterinary is so intense so a year off allows you to just chill for a bit before going back into education. I got a job at Argos so it is also a great time to save money before uni (I have never had a job before so I also think it was good for me to get experience of working and having a job aswell). The only negative I would say is that I was nervous that if I didn't get any offers, I would then need to reapply next year which would mean I had 2 gap years. But luckily I did get an offer (literally got it yesterday) so now I can just enjoy the rest of this year. To be honest in terms of getting more experience, you can't do loads more because obviously you apply October so you would only have a few months by the time you finish your A Levels. If you have any questions just let me know 😊 Wishing you the best of luck with your application 💕

Definitely a positive thing to do although as someone has already said your wex has to be completed before the October application deadline to be counted in the number of hours required. However any additional work experience or client facing role will definitely help for the interviews. Many vet students, if not the majority have had a gap year and the schools like it. From your first year of studies you will have to do lambing, dairy and equine work and a gap year brings a self confidence that is noticeable in your exchanges with those that will be providing your placements So if it’s from choice or forced due to either having obtained no offers the first time round or not achieving the grades, a gap year is not a punishment, on the contrary it’s a year when you can travel, work and rest because vet med is an exhausting degree.

Hi, I'm in the process of applying for veterinary medicine this year for deferred entry, so whether i get a place this year or not, I'll be doing a gap year! I personally think that a gap year is a great idea (obviously, as I'm doing one) especially if it's what you want to do, it's also great because the gap year will always be your choice and not something you have to do if you needed to reapply! Good luck with everything!
